Building a campfire is really easy. Just make sure that you are doing it correctly so you can avoid injuries or fire accidents. Here is a simple step by step guide on how to start a cozy camp-fire.

Things to Do Before You Start you build a campfire

Before you light anything, make sure that the campsite permits campers to build campfires. Due to several deadly incidents of forest fires, some sites prohibit the practice of build a campfire anywhere on the campsite. There are also sites that designate special areas for such activities. So be very sure about existing campsite regulations and rules before you start to build a campfire in order to avoid fines or tickets.

If there are no restrictions, then the next thing to do is to start gathering wood, twigs, and leaves. Never cut standing trees or break tree branches. What you need are thoroughly dried twigs, dried leaves and grass, and medium sized dead woods approximately 2 to 3 inches in diameter. Do not use fresh wood because it will not catch fire and you will just suffer from the terrible smoke that it will produce trying to burn.

Preparing the Ground to build a campfire

Campfires should be set-up on a level ground away from the trees and bushes. It is best to find a clearing where the ground is mostly dry soil. In order to prevent the fire from spreading, you need to make a circle of rocks where you intend to place the fire ring. The rock barrier will keep burning ashes and embers from spreading thus allowing you to manage the fire easily. You must also avoid setting up a camp-fire on a windy area. Make sure that there is adequate physical barrier that will block the wind.

Building the Campfire

After preparing the fire ring, you can now build a campfire. Gather dried leaves and grasses and place them in the middle of the fire ring. Then build a tepee of dried twigs and small sticks over the dried leaves. Use as much twigs so that the bigger woods can catch fire easily.

After arranging the twigs, you should arrange the big dead woods around the tepee. Place more sticks and dried twigs on top of the wood but make sure not to cover the top portion. Fire needs air to grow to build a campfire so make sure that the top portion is free from wood or twigs.

You can now light the pile of wood with a match. Just drop a match inside the pile so that the dried leaves inside will catch fire. In building campfires, it is not advisable to use kerosene or butane to start a fire. Just use the dry leaves as fuel so you can be safer.

There you now know how to build a campfire. You’ve just started a campfire and all you have to do is to enjoy it through the night. With proper preparations, you can easily start cozy campfires in less than 15 minutes.
