Turks and Caicos Islands

February 5, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

The Turks and Caicos Islands are situated approximately 575 miles southeast of Miami and 39 miles south east of Mayaguana in the Bahamas. Turks and Caicos Islands have one of the longest coral reefs in the world, making it a very desirable diving destination.
The white sandy beaches cover 230 miles in total and are surrounded by crystal clear waters. The islands are relatively flat but depending on the island, the terrain can vary from sand dunes to lush green vegetation. There are eight major islands: Salt Cay, Grand Turk, South Caicos, East Caicos, Middle Caicos, North Caicos, Providenciales and West Caicos. The people on the islands are known for their friendliness. East Caicos and West Caicos are uninhabited.

Turks and Caicos gets its main revenue from the tourist industry. The fishing industry also continues throughout Turks and Caicos. On the islands of Providenciales and Grand Turk you will find International style hotel accommodations, each one has its own unique set up and surroundings. Native dishes are served along with international cuisine, you will find this at most of the restaurants. More casual and serene accommodations can be found on the other islands and smaller cays.

Grand Turk is the capital of Turks and Caicos and the financial center of the islands. It has the second largest population of around 3,720 people. Grand Turk is one of the main historical points of Turks and Caicos. There are many old buildings and ruins, along with The Turks and Caicos National Museum. Grand Turk’s main attraction is diving, with many dive operators and schools. It caters to novice snorkelers and experienced divers alike and the major income for the island is dive-orientated tourism with the island’s outstanding protected coral reef.
Located on Grand Turk, Cockburn Town is the administrative capital and the historic and cultural center of the islands. It was believed to be where Columbus landed during his discovery of the New World in 1492. One can tour the town itself on a walking tour.

Bermudan style architecture representative of the salt era of the 18th and 19th century line Duke and Font Streets. Two of these buildings are now popular inns. Other buildings make up the governor’s residence, other government offices, the public library, churches and private residences and fraternities. A popular tourist spot to visit is the Turks and Caicos National Museum where a central exhibit tells the story of the Molasses Reef Wreck, the oldest European shipwreck discovered in the Western Hemisphere (dated around 1505). The museum also outlines the rich cultural and natural diversity of the islands. Other historic sites include the Lighthouse which offers a spectacular view of the island, the prison, Fire Hill and the Hawks Nest Anchorage. It is well worth hiring a taxi and driver/guide to tour the island to give you first-hand information on the history and places to see. Another interesting attraction we witnessed during our tour was an abundance of feral horses and donkeys inhabiting the island, roaming free.

Providenciales, or more commonly called “Provo”, covers an area of 38 miles and is the most developed island in Turks and Caicos. Provo, with a population of over 6,000, is found on the west side of the islands and offers all modern conveniences, including superb hotels, a casino and a Golf Club. Provo is considered a great destination for those who want to escape their busy schedules and relax. Provo has the largest non-native population made up of Haitians, Dominicans, Canadians, Germans, French and Americans. The growing population is mainly due to the completion of the airport in 1984, which is capable of dealing with large planes.

The most beautiful beaches are found on the north of the island, near Sapodilla Bay, along with a long coral reef rich in aquatic life. Towards the south of the island, Chalk Sound, offers a large lake with striking turquoise water and an array of small cays. South Dock found east of Sapodilla Bay is the island’s commercial port and has the capability to deal with containerized goods.

The two main and oldest settlements on Provo Island are Bight and Blue Hills, both of which have a real Caribbean feeling. Provo shops offer a good range of boutiques at Turtle Cove and downtown one can find a range of retail shops, business offices and travel agents.   Provo is the main island for hotels and resorts, with many accommodation and recreational facilities options available.

A great attraction to the islands is the varied and bountiful wildlife and sea creatures they offer. The islands are arranged around the edges of two large limestone plateaus called the Turks Bank, that has deep offshore waters which serve as major transit points for Humpback Whales, spotted Eagle Rays, Manta Rays and Turtles. From late December through April, it is believed that as many as 2,500 Humpback Whales pass through the shores on their annual migration to the Mouchoir Bank. During the summer, divers may encounter many Manta Rays cruising the face of the walls, and encounters with dolphins are not uncommon.

Bordering the edges of the islands are lines of coral reefs and some of the most impressive walls of coral in the Caribbean. From the legendary walls of Grand Turk, West Caicos and Provo’s Northwest Point to the historic wrecks south of Salt Cay, a dozen world class walls have become important for the serious diver.

The same rich waters are used by anglers fishing for Tuna, Wahoo and Blue Marlin. Also, the salt ponds and inland marshes serve as excellent feeding grounds for resident and migratory birds. One can be on the lookout for Great Blue Herons, Flamingos, Osprey, Pelicans, Egrets, Terns, Frigates, Boobies and other water birds. As part of the National Parks system more than twelve small cays have been set aside and protected for breeding grounds.

On some of the less disturbed and smaller islands of Little Water Cay or Great Sand Cay one can find the Turks island Iguana, which is endangered and delicate. It thrives on these deserted islands, away from the influence of man. These islands are also protected by the National Parks system.

A beach vacation to the Turks and Caicos Islands would truly be a memorable experience. It would be wonderful to visit each island, but even if you were only able to see one, the beauty and pristine beaches would make it a worthwhile vacation.

Educate Your Kids, Have Fun and Save Money Too

February 5, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

Nobody ever said that having fun couldn’t be a learning experience as well. There are so many inexpensive ways to have fun with your kids and educate them at the same time. Learning together makes for smart kids and fond memories.

Your local library is the obvious place to start. Books provide unlimited knowledge and avenues to unknown destinations. Libraries offer lectures, movies, and storytellers for all ages usually for free or a modest admission charge. Be sure and ask about the annual library book sale. You and your children can amass countless books for almost nothing.

Take your children to a museum and you take them to discovery. Most towns have numerous museums exhibiting a wide range of subjects including natural history and art. Some of the more modern museums offer hands on or interactive exhibits. You can visit these museums often and see something different each time. Of course, don’t miss aquariums to teach your youngsters about creatures of the sea.

County or State Fairs are also filled with fun and learning. A visit can be very inexpensive if you avoid the rides and midway. Many free shows are presented each day ranging from swooping birds, dogs chasing a Frisbee to military bands. The various exhibits can be quite educational and include new cars and energy of the future. Check the fair’s website for special days when kids get in free.

Make a worm farm. This is a learning experience that could turn into a business. Worms can thrive in a properly made container and multiply quickly. They eat waste from the garden and table scraps. (Not meat or dairy.) Worms are easy to care for but you do have to keep the soil moist and provide good drainage. Your crop is excellent for fishermen and gardeners.

Children can learn a lot about life by visiting a nursing home. They don’t have to know anyone there. Most homes are asking for volunteers to come and visit with residents who are lonesome and have no family. It would be nice for visitors to bring greeting cards or some other small token to be given. Your visits would be appreciated.

Enroll your child in special classes such as art, dance, music or learning a new language.
Let the child’s obvious talent be your guide or encourage the youngster to step out of his comfort zone and learn a new skill. Many of these classes are held at community colleges or libraries and are free or reasonably priced.

Teach your children some of the games of your day such as throwing horseshoes or washers. These games can still be family favorites and cost nothing to play. Invite the neighbors over for family contests.

Become your kids’ favorite storyteller by relating tales of your childhood and theirs before they can remember. Tell them for instance what happened on the day they were born. Sharing is teaching; and families that learn together enjoy being together.

Travel to Cozumel

February 5, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

Cozumel is one of Mexico’s most popular travel and vacation destinations. It is Mexico’s Caribbean island, a paradise that is home to the world’s second largest coral reef, the enormous Palancar reef located off the island’s southern tip. It is located just 12 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It measures 28 miles long and 10 miles wide, and is world-renown for its sparkling white sand beaches and azure tropical waters.

The exceptionally clear water makes it ideal for novice divers and snorkelers alike, and makes it a world-class dive destination. Jacques Cousteau put Cozumel on the map with his fascination of the fantastic coral reefs here, and publicized it as one of the best places to go scuba diving in the world. Depending on the season there is 100-200 feet visibility underwater.

Water sports in Cozumel

Beach in CozumelPicture yourself viewing a dazzling array of tropical fish and coral in these clear Caribbean waters. That’s what its like to visit Cozumel, but since diving, snorkelling and charter fishing are the island’s foremost attractions, there are limited other attractions for the tourist (unless one travels to the mainland.) Outlined below are a few of the best features of Cozumel.

As well as the crystal clear waters, Cozumel offers white sandy beaches, which increase in size the further south you go on the island, as well as many resorts geared for the ultimate traveler. All of this is set against a backdrop of ancient Mayan ruins and the sights of San Miguel, the island’s capital and only town. In San Miguel the traveler can shop for traditional crafts, do some bar-hopping, and visit the various casual restaurants. The traveler can also take a ferry across the water to the mainland to Playa del Carmen, an hour south of Cancun, and spend a day enjoying the sites and offerings there.

The People of Cozumel

The people native to Cozumel were of Mayan descent. The Mayan were an advanced culture of farmers, fishermen and warriors who ruled for over 2000 years before the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 15th century. The legacy of their rule still survives in the remnants of the huge cities that they built during the time they were in power. One interesting site which is not well-known is San Gervacio. San Gervacio was once a sacred site where Mayan women went to worship the goddess of fertility, Ixchel. Other ruins that may be of interest are sites such as Chichen Itza that hold massive pyramids which rival those at Cheops and Tulum. Chichen Itza is the only Mayan city built overlooking the sea. Tikal is another ruin that a tourist may find interesting, set in lush jungle where, at times, wild monkeys can still be seen swinging in the trees. Each of these sites is an easy one-day excursion from Cozumel.

The region of Cozumel and Akumal are also well-known for underground rivers that infiltrate the porous limestone of the Yucatan providing some of the most beautiful cave and cavern diving in the world. The caves are pristine and are filled with clear, clear water. Each has its own particular marine live unique to their own cave environment.

Cozumel is also home to many endemic species and subspecies. In birds, this includes the Cozumel Thrasher, the Cozumel Vireo, and the Cozumel Great Curassow, which at this time is almost extinct. If you are a bird-watcher it would be wise to bring binoculars and a bird book in an attempt to view these species. Also found uniquely to the island are several dwarf mammals, namely the Cozumel Island Raccoon (a separate distinct species apart from its mainland relative), the Dwarf Coati, and the Cozumel Fox, which is also close to extinction. Endemic marine life includes the Splendid Toadfish.

Shopping and things to do in Cozumel

Cozumel, like all Mexico, is famous for its beautiful silver jewellery, pottery, carvings, colourful artwork and clothes. There are many shops to visit in downtown San Miguel offering various local wares for the shopper, as well as beach vendors if you choose not to venture out of the your hotel area. Galeria Azul is one such place offering works for sale by local artists. Santitos y Miligritos (meaning “little saints and miracles” in Spanish) offers art, jewellery and artesania by local artists.

For the more enthusiastic visitor, Cozumel also has a great night-life with something for everyone. There are stylish lounge bars for the young, well-dressed traveler and more rustic Caribbean clubs that play salsa music to dancing crowds. One can also visit the world’s smallest Hard Rock café here, or enjoy a wide range of live music at El Manati.

With all of the uniqueness and variety in here, Cozumel still offers the traditional Mexican flavour, even to its Mexican cuisine, which is known for its intense, varied flavors, colorful decoration, and variety of spices. One can enjoy enchiladas, guacamole, chili, burritos, and many more well-known Mexican dishes in the many restaurants. The traveler must remember that Mexico is all about spices and is the home of the spicy-hot habanera pepper.

Many Mexican songs are known world-wide and visitors can enjoy hearing their favorites played here. Mexican music is unique and offers the typical mariachis band wearing huge sombreros.

Travel to Cozumel

For variety, spicy Mexican flavor, beautiful white sandy beaches and superb crystal clear coral reefs, Cozumel can’t be beat. But, Cozumel is also a cruise ship port and at times can be a very hectic and busy place, with many cruise ships docking at the same time. Crowds can be overwhelming at times, and the place can be really “hopping”. It is wise to consider what type of traveler you are before visiting Cozumel. If your wish is a totally relaxed, quiet vacation then Cozumel may not be for you. But if you enjoy the hustle and bustle and excitement of a busy port, Cozumel is a great place to visit.

Luxury Travel on a Shoestring Budget

February 4, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

Love to travel but don’t have the thousands of dollars to do it? You can get luxury travel on a shoestring budget just by planning a little more carefully. Read these tips that will allow you to go on your well-deserved getaway without burning a hole in your pocket.

Always remember when planning your trip that timing is key.  School vacation weeks are the worst – always crowded with children and the airfare is sky high – no pun intended.

Sometimes a coach seat during a school vacation week could cost more than a first class ticket during the off-season.  So remember, unless you want a screaming child kicking the back of your seat throughout the entire flight, avoid winter and spring breaks at all costs.

Regardless of where you decide to book your luxury travel arrangements – with an agent or on the Internet – make sure that you know exactly who you are working with.  Make sure you choose the right specialist for what you’re looking for.

Consider all aspects of your deal – not just the price tag.  Quality wins over quantity in some cases.  This way, you’ll have the luxury you want on a shoestring budget. This also makes sure that you build a solid relationship with the company you’re dealing with.  If you are loyal to them, they will be loyal to you.  Always remember, they want your business.

Think about how frequent flyer programs work: if you choose their airline consistently, they’ll reward you by giving you a free flight.  When booking online or with an agent, make sure you always ask questions.  You will never get anywhere from being silent, so see if they could possibly upgrade an aspect of your trip.

Your coach tickets could turn into first class – or maybe your suite could turn into a deluxe version. Don’t be scared to ask for things – if they say no, then you’re no worse off than before.

If for some reason the company you’re working with makes an error, be sure to take advantage of it.  Most companies want to keep up a high level of customer satisfaction and rely on their guests to provide them with information on how to achieve that.

Your criticism will ensure that yourself (and other travelers) will have a satisfactory luxury vacation. Be sure to find someone who is willing to work with unhappy customers.  Many times, people get aggravated with customers who complain, so check review sites ahead of time. Once you get the trip planned out, relax and have fun while you enjoy your luxury travel on a shoestring budget.
