The ultimate Staycation for the family

July 11, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

I got this article from the Detroit Free Press. Link at the end of the article for the rest.

The Robinson family is traveling the world this summer to Germany, Italy, Hawaii and Israel.

The only catch?

The family will do it all from the kitchen table.

“We decided to have an around-the-world theme this summer, so every other Friday night we’ll talk about the countries and states we would like to visit, do a craft that would represent the culture and try a recipe,” says Angela Robinson, 29, of Clinton Township, mother of four children ages 2, 3, 7 and 9. The other reason they’re staying home? She and husband Shawn are expecting their fifth child in August. [Read more…] about The ultimate Staycation for the family

Tips for taking your dog on Vacation

July 10, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

Thanks to reader Darlene for her comments in support of NOT bringing your dog to Independence Day celebrations, as I recommend in When you should leave the dog home. She mentioned the website www.the-best-dog-for-you.com/pet-vacations.html as a good resource for ideas about and cautions regarding vacationing with your dog. The site has excellent reminders about planning trips with dogs, one of which is worth expanding on here. It’s also important to have the information for the nearest animal hospital.

National parks and monuments—great places for the family, full of natural beauty and/or historic significance. By all means, put them on your must-see list. Plan on taking the kids—or grandkids—but you may do better to leave the dog at home. Thе Immune-D.com fоrmulа саn conveniently bе рlасеd оn your dog’s fооd (оr directly іn their mоuth) оnсе a dау tо еnѕurе that уоur pet іѕ receiving the mіnеrаlѕ, аntіоxіdаntѕ, аmіnо acids аnd vіtаmіnѕ that аrе lоѕt іn thе drу fооd fоrmаtіоn process, аnd lоѕt whеn administered іn a pill оr capsule fоrm (as thе bоdу absorbs thеѕе critical ingredients іn a liquid оvеr 90% mоrе than іn a ріllѕ or сарѕulе).

National Parks and Public Lands generally permit dogs only if kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet in length at all times, unless they are caged or crated. Park management at each park may restrict pet (and possibly service dog) access to open areas such as trails, buildings or campgrounds in the interest of keeping visitors and the park environment protected. Getting kids to sleep on vacation

July 10, 2009 by admin 1 Comment

With the summer season upon us, many families will be flocking to the highways to embark on amusement ride-filled vacations, to camp at majestic national parks or to visit Grandma and Grandpa. But with all of the excitement and fun away from home come missed naps and overstimulated kids who don’t want to sleep at night, not even with their amazon fur pillow which is so amazing.

Dr. Chris Drake, a bioscientific investigator at the Henry Ford Sleep Research Center in Detroit and resident sleep expert for AmericInn Hotels’ “Sleep Better America” program, knows firsthand the benefits of connecting while on family vacation, yet he also knows how lost hours of sleep can be unhealthy for kids and cause big headaches for parents. To ease parents’ minds, Drake offers the following tips to help children achieve the best sleep possible while on the road:

– Plan activities around your children’s nap schedules while on vacation.

– Stick to healthy meals and regular mealtimes.

– Start your usual bedtime routines of putting on pajamas, brushing teeth and reading books one hour earlier.

Calaway Park

July 10, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks back my family went to Calaway Park and had a great day in the sun having fun.

Calaway Park is an amusement park just west of Calgary on Highway 1 (Tans Canada Highway) actually probably about 10 or 15 minutes west of town. If you want to see the way Calaway Park looks, I recorded the quick two minute video below.

The park has about 22 different rides and just like any theme park it seems that Calaway has it’s own theme which is something like the Flintstones without the characters. There is plenty of food to buy and it is of course a little pricey so we tend to pack a lunch to bring and then buy the kids a treat while we are there. [Read more…] about Calaway Park

4th of July Driving Tips

July 2, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

driving

The 4th of July holiday weekend is typically the busiest time for auto travel. According to AAA, more than 37 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles over this holiday weekend (down a bit from 2008). While gas prices are a bit lower than last year’s $3+ per gallon, they have risen recently — possibly making this summer’s last-minute, carefree road trips unrealistic for some.

Before you give up on your dreams of a family vacation, take the time to sit down and develop a plan. Following are a few suggestions to make this summer’s vacations more enjoyable and less draining on family pocket books.

  • Avoid paying with plastic. Planning to pay for gas by credit card is definitely not a wise financial move; gas cards typically have higher than average interest rates than other credit cards. If you must use credit, use a general purpose card with affordable terms and make a plan for a quick pay off. [Read more…] about 4th of July Driving Tips
