Teens Becoming More Interested In Family Trips

July 9, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

teens on family tripsTeens on family trips are becoming less negative about the idea of taking a family holiday, according to research by Mintel.

A survey by the company found that less than a quarter of teens on family trips(23%)  aged between 16 and 25 currently feel the need to escape from their parents during a break, compared to over a third (36%) two years ago.

A Quarter of teens on family trips enjoy it.

In talking about it 24% of the teens on family trips said in 2008 that they cannot afford to travel without their mum and dad, while 18% expressed the same view this year, suggesting that money is not the main reason behind the positive attitude towards family holidays.

Tom Rees, senior travel analyst at Mintel, said: ‘While the recession may have played its part in encouraging Britain’s young adults to get a paid-for break with their family, these figures highlight the fact that it’s not about cost for those choosing to do so.

‘However, recession-driven recruitment freezes have hit graduates particularly hard and created a real fear that a “lost generation” will be the legacy – influencing both their attitudes towards holidays and their ability to travel.’

I remember as a teens on family trips that I was not a big fan wanting to hang out with friends instead but once away I always had a good time.

Around a quarter (23%) of the 16- to 25-year-olds surveyed said they are likely to go on holiday with their parents again in future.

Really the most important thing that parents of kids still at home can do is to keep the kids and young adults interested in being teens on family trips. Just like when you go tent camping as a little kid and have an exciting time, now that the kids are older the vacation choices need to stay interesting to the kids as well.

Calgary Stampede

July 9, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

calgary stampedeWell the Calgary Stampede starts today. Most people I would guess have heard of the Calgary Stampede but as a person that has lived in Calgary for 12 years I can tell you that the Stampede is the social and summer highlight in Calgary and most people in this city would agree that it is the event that makes Calgary most famous.

The Calgary Stampede is on this year from July 9th to the 18th and is an all day and evening event from start to finish. There are rides for the kids, there is a special indoor playground and crafts area free for kids and of course all the horses, cows, goats, and pigs that the kids can usually pet and have pictures taken with.

Calgary stampede History

The Calgary Stampede is a celebration of the farming and ranching culture of Alberta and because of this the city turns into Urban cowboys with cowboy boots and cowboy hats for two weeks. For adults there are lots of bands, both rock and country, at the Calgary Stampede itself as well as at all of the bars around town. So not only is there events at the stampede for kids but for adults as well.

The highlight of the Calgary Stampede has to be the rodeo. There is an afternoon session of the rodeo as well as a night session. The night session has the famous Chuck wagon races as well as lots of entertainment and is a highlight although it may be a bit long and late for the little kids. The afternoon rodeo is great for kids and they get to see bucking broncos, horses, and lassoing cows.

If it is too late for you to attend the Calgary Stamped this year then you should definitely make plans for next year to attend. The Calgary Stampede is billed as the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth and it really is.

Family Travel Tips

It takes a village to raise a child, and at least as many to entertain one on an airplane. With that in mind, Nina Willdorf, editor in chief of Budget Travel, collected travel advice from her readers for a handy new book, The Smart Family’s Passport: 350 Money, Time and Sanity Saving Tips (Quirk Books, $14.95).

Here, a few of our favorites:

I write my cell phone number on the inside of rubber bracelets . . . and have my children wear them when we’re away from home. That way, should we get separated, they can show the number to a helpful adult.

— Susan Redman, Hebron, Conn.

When we take our kids to foreign destinations, in addition to spending days at museums, cathedrals and castles, we visit supermarkets and department stores. We learn a lot about each culture by perusing the aisles. Some food is odd to us, some is familiar and we always buy something new to try.

— Gwen Gibbons, Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Whenever we stay at a hotel whose rate doesn’t include a continental breakfast, I bring several packages of instant oatmeal. Even rooms without a microwave often have a coffeemaker, so heating water isn’t a problem. We all make our own oatmeal in the coffee cups provided.

Take your kids to the park and Leave Them Alone

May 21, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

I remember as a kid in the 70s that I would get off school and just stay at the park or go home have a snack and then take off and play at the park. Nowadays that just does not happen much, in fact my kids only go to the park with me.

Well I was listening to a story on the radio today about Lenore Skenazy from Free Range Kids. Lenore has designated tomorrow “Take your kids to the park and leave them there” day. A bit of a long name but the whole idea seems to be causing a firestorm of criticism. Lenore is saying that kids are spending to little time hanging out together and because we coddle our kids they do not have a sense of personal responsibility that they should have.

Lenore has even written a book about the ideas called Free-Range Kids

I have two kids, a 6 year old son and a 10 year old daughter and up until a month ago I would never let them go to the park by themselves, I thought we were over protective but in fact this seems to be pretty normal in this day and age of dangerous predators and kidnappers.

What I found though from the interview was that Lenore stated that parks are safer today (although a lot emptier) than they were in the 70s and 80s when I was a kid. So I have to wonder if this is the truth then why is it that we are so preoccupied with protecting our kids from an invisible stranger when my parents were not nearly as worried years ago.

Well my guess as to why people are so worried for their kids is probably thanks in a large part to 24 hour news focusing on very scary stories that keep people tuned in. The dangers may be out there but every abducted kid story is big news for weeks so it looks like it is happening every day.

So what can we do to keep the kids safe? I believe that we need to warn our kids of dangers, don’t talk to strangers. Also it is a good idea to make sure that they are always aware of their surroundings and to have a safety term.

A safety term is a term that a family member or stranger would need to use to take the kid. Your child does not ask for it, the adult needs to give it unasked to make it effective. A term like “kittens like dogs” or something as strange so that there is no confusion.

So Lenore is talking about dropping your kids at the park alone for 30 minutes or an hour, not all day, starting at 10am or whatever time seems good in the morning and this way hopefully lots of kids get out and get to play together.

Do you like this idea? Does it seem too much for kids? Will it teach them personal responsibility?

Weather in Thailand – When to Visit Thailand

May 17, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

Weather is a prime consideration for most people visiting Thailand. There are three seasons in Thailand

Summer runs essentially from March through May

Temperatures can reach over 100 degrees F (38 C) with the heat index going as high as 120 F (48 C). It may not get below 80 F (27 C) at night. This is also the Dry Season, with very little rain. It is oppressively and dangerously hot for some people. Rainy Season runs from June through October

Frequent heavy rains, most often at night. Temps from the 60s F (16 C) at night to the 90s (32 C) during the day.

Cool Season runs from November through February.

Temps from the 60s F (16 C) at night (can be much cooler – indeed cold – in the North) to the 90s (32 C) during the day. Not much rain.

Most years in Bangkok, the three seasons are, in effect, The Hot Season, The Hot and Rainy Season and The Hottest Season you’ve ever experienced in your life.

In terms of weather, the choice for most people is the Cool Season – November through February.
