The art of Budget Travel

September 27, 2011 by admin 1 Comment

Travel has been so cheap for so long that we have all forgotten how to get the very most from our travel budgets, whatever their size. Flights have been so cheap and package deals so easy to take that the art of budget conscious independent travel is all but dead; so how exactly is it done?

At first glance, there appear to be three major areas to consider;

1) Destination
2) Accommodation
3) Travel

Firstly; destination. Once you have decided what sort of holiday you are after, be it a ski break, gourmet tour, lazy beach getaway, family holiday or romantic escape, naturally, thoughts turn to destination. This is where a little research comes in. Eastern European holidays are notoriously good value for money, especially for ski holidays, although Andorra will always be a leading light for cheap ski holidays, especially for those that enjoy a good night out after a long day on the slopes. Generally though, resorts are expensive, and the more independent your holiday, the larger the possible savings. [Read more…] about The art of Budget Travel

Given your limited budget, have you made any plans for a family national park vacation? Any time of year, a low cost getaway can create memories to cherish. But for some Sandwiched Boomers, squeezed between caring for growing children and aging parents, the choices may be slim.

According to a recent poll, close to 80% of adults believe that family and friends are more important than possessions – in other words, relationships trump ‘bling’ in creating happiness, satisfaction and fulfillment of the American dream. So, in these tough financial times, families are still taking vacations together yet are managing to cut back on spending. Many are accomplishing this feat by visiting the National Parks – figures show that attendance has been unusually high. Even the President and Vice-President have visited some of these majestic national treasures with their families. [Read more…] about Make the Most of a Family National Park Vacation

In addition to those savings, many of the participating resorts offer ‘Kid’s Stay Free’ and all-inclusive dining plans that are perfect for families.  The best family vacation deal I found was a seven (7) night vacation for a family of five (5) from Seattle to Montego Bay, Jamaica for about $817 per person, after the coupon code discount was applied.   This seven (7) night vacation package includes roundtrip airfare, taxes, fees, accomodations at the All-Inclusive Point Village Resort, meals, beverages, tips, and non-motorized water sports.   I know from experience that ‘all-inclusive’ is the cheapest way to vacation with a family, and it is literally impossible to get bored!
