Travel to Costa Rica

November 11, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

There are many ways to travel to Costa Rica. Most people arrive by plane of course, but you could have a great adventure going overland. From the USA you would travel through Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

You could also go by boat, either from California to the Pacific coast or from Florida to the western side of Costa Rica which borders the Caribbean Sea.

Where is Costa Rica?

Costa Rica Map This central American paradise lies between Panama and Nicaragua. It has coast on two sides and it is a relatively small country, less than 20,000 square miles (about the size of West Virginia).

It has become a very popular travel destination in recent years. This is due to many factors, including the large expanse of coastline, tropical climate and stable political situation.

The country has been able to avoid the political revolutions and civil wars that have plagued many other parts of central America.

Costa Rica is a democracy with strong environmental policies. The country’s aim is to become the first carbon neutral nation.

With many acres of beautiful forest to protect, and a large proportion of the national income coming from tourism, the government has been wise in its emphasis on the environment.

What to See in Costa Rica

The Corcovado national park is one of the best places to go to spot wildlife. It is internationally known for its biodiversity and you may see big cats and tapirs as well as many species of monkey and birds.

Tortuguero national park is named after turtles. Several kinds of turtle nest there including endangered species. You can also hope to see monkeys, sloths, and many birds and reptiles.

Costa Rica is most famous for its top quality coffee beans. Its other main exports are bananas and pineapples. However, in the last 10 years the electronics industry has been a major player in the national economy, with many companies establishing a base here.

costa rica thermal poolsTourism is now the main industry. Costa Rica is one of the best known destinations in the world for ecotourism, with many acres of national parkland and protected areas attracting almost 2 million tourists a year.

This is a huge number when you consider that the resident population is only just over 4 million. Tourists are appreciated and made welcome, perhaps not surprising when you consider that they spend an average of $1000 each during their stay.

Around half of the visitors are from the USA and Canada.

Many people also stay for extended visits. American entrepreneurs are almost as likely to have a second home in Costa Rica as in Florida, and it is a popular haven for raw food eaters who thrive on the many varieties of delicious local fruit.

The national language is Spanish and Roman Catholicism is the official state religion. Around 75% of the population are practicing Catholics.

All in all, Costa Rica is one of the most welcoming travel destinations that you could plan to visit. Its popularity is well deserved and if you have the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica you should grab it with both hands.

Planning A Cancun Vacation

August 24, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

It can be very difficult for you planning a Cancun vacation when it comes to not being there or having the experience of Mexico; this is a common problem for those in the United States or another foreign country.

Planning A Cancun Vacation

You will want to travel to Mexico, but since it is a far away place, you may have a hard time trying to get it organized. That is why you will want to do plenty of research and after you are prepared to organize the trip you will want to make sure that, you are planning a Cancun vacation thoroughly so that it can go smoothly.

Using a Travel Agency When Planning A Cancun Vacation

planning a Cancun vacationYou may find that planning a Cancun vacation can be overwhelming and you may want to have a travel agency do some of the planning for you. You will find that this is a great way for you to save some trouble and headaches in the end.

You may have to pay the extra for the agent, but it is worth it. However, if you use a travel agency, there may be a few restrictions and you will not have as much control over your vacation. Planning on your own is a lot of work, but it can be done.

Finding a Hotel in Cancun

First, when planning a Cancun vacation, you will need to try to find a place to stay and you will want to research various hotels in the Cancun hotel zone. Pictures online can be deceiving, so look for reviews from people who have traveled to this area before. You may also want to call the hotel and ask them some questions about the things that they may or may not offer in their vicinity.

Word of mouth can also be handy when planning a Cancun vacation, so talk to your friends and family who have traveled to Cancun and stayed at one of the hotels. You will want to book to make sure that you talk to hotel about any specific accommodations that you may want or need and so that they can repeat back to you all the information about your hotel and reservation so that your reservation does not come up lost.

You will also need to get to Cancun. You will want to be ahead of the game in planning a Cancun vacation so make sure that you have the proper paperwork for you to get in and out of Mexico. You will need to have a passport and id so that you can enter the country.

Also when planning a Cancun vacation be sure to book a flight that brings you right into the city, because you may or may not be able to find transportation to your hotel immediately from the airport. Most packages will include or not include transportation to and from the airport and the Cancun airport is a pretty long drive from some of the hotels.

It is important for you to learn all of the rules when it comes to the things that you enter into Mexico and out of Mexico when planning a Cancun vacation and you’ll want to check out all the rules of customs and what you can and can not bring home.

Lastly, you will need to plan things to do and places to eat. There are people who will end up taking a trip to Mexico spontaneous, but then you may not be able to get on the best tours or into the best restaurants. Plan ahead, but leave plenty of room for flexibility.

When it comes to Cancun, you are going to have to travel with flexibility. You will be taking a vacation that may not be perfect, but you will want to make every bit of an effort to making the situation to be a positive one.

You will also find that vacation in Cancun will take a lot of preparation and you will want to take months in advance planning a Cancun vacation.

West Edmonton Mall

June 16, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

West Edmonton Mall has a lot to see. My family lives in Calgary and we are about a 3 hour drive from Edmonton so a couple of weeks back we took a trip down to Edmonton just for the opportunity to go to West Edmonton Mall.

West Edmonton Mall is the biggest shopping mall in the world and is definitely a destination weekend trip and we had a good time, with a couple of exceptions.

West Edmonton Mall Highlights

So when you go to a shopping mall you are supposed to shop. And shop we did for about 3 hours. Actually West Edmonton mall is huge and there are even multiples of the same stores in the mall. The mall was originally built in 1981 and it is really starting to look dated although there is always a turnover of stores to keep things fresh.

On this trip the new Victoria Secret store had just opened and unbelievably there were lineups to go in and buy lingerie (strange to me). The stores are a real mix with upscale and downscale as there is a lot of stores, about 800, in the mall.

There are a few big attractions in West Edmonton Mall. There is an indoor amusement park, the worlds biggest indoor waterpark, a seal and fish exhibit, a big pirate ship, indoor mini gold, and a public ice rink.

Because of all the secondary attractions a trip to West Edmonton mall can be expensive. I can only speak for my family but we had to choose on the Saturday between going to the amusement park ($32.95/person) or the Indoor Waterpark (also 32.95/person). We shose the waterpark and had a fantastic day riding down all the waterslides and playing in the wave pool.

Marine Life Park at West Edmonton Mall

We also spent some time in the middle of the day in the Marine Life Park, which was $26 for the family and saw not only the sea lion show but also the feeding of the sharks and a touch and feel tank that the kids got to feel stingrays and sea cucumbers and stuff.

Accommodations and Food at West Edmonton Mall

This was a real falling down for us. Both the food and the hotel itself.

We stayed in a regular room in the Fantasyland Hotel. The Fantasyland Hotel is attached to the mall and was built at the same time as the mall. The themed rooms are neat looking but kind of small.

Our plain old regular room was still $235 a night and did not even include free wifi, the rooms were dated and it was just a regular hotel to us. Fantasyland did have a package though that included 2 free tickets to the waterpark so we did take advantage of that.

I was very disappointed with the hotel overall though for the cost. You can stay within a block for less than or around $100 per night which is a much better deal for any family.

The West Edmonton Mall has a huge food area but it is the same only greasy expensive food that you find in the food fait at any mall in any city and that is where we ended up eating. In retrospect there are many much better choices.

One of the ideas built into the mall are themed areas. There is a New Orleans Bourbon Street type area, a European street and there is a nice mix of restaurants instead of crappy fast food that you can eat instead.

With the kids it is always so hit and miss though that it drives me crazy trying to find good food that they will eat at a decent price.

Overall our trip to West Edmonton Mall although fun was expensive compared to most weekends. My wife who controls our money groused about the cost of “just a weekend” but it was really nice to get out of town and check it out.

You can learn more about West Edmonton Mall at the Mall website.

Top 3 Australian Attractions

June 6, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Many people are lucky enough to get to visit Australia at some point in their lives. But once you’ve sorted out the essentials, including applying for a passport and getting your Australian visa, the next big thing to consider is what you’re going to do when you get there. Here are three of the most famous attractions in Australia that you really shouldn’t miss when you visit.

Uluru – Ayers Rock

Can you think of any natural site more incredible than Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock? This mighty monolith, the biggest in the world, is one of the defining natural wonders of Australia. A sacred site for the aborigines for thousands of years, it is now a major tourist attraction in the heart of the desert.

Ayers Rock Australia

Situated in Alice Springs, the trip here will take some time but it is certainly worth it. The huge rock is 348 meters high, and measures 2.2 miles along and 1.2 miles across. It is absolutely colossal, and standing there surrounded by the flat desert makes it even more impressive.

Walk around the rock, or even climb up it-just make sure you go well prepared, it’s a long way! Aboriginal guides are on hand to teach you about the history of Uluru, making the whole experience a fascinating and unmissable one. And make sure that you get to see it at the best times of the day: sunrise and sunset. The changing colors at these times make it truly spectacular.

The Great Barrier Reef

Another natural wonder that Australia can boast is the Great Barrier Reef, the biggest coral reef in the world. This incredible area that stretches down the east coast of Australia is home to a huge variety of marine life, including turtles, dolphins, whales, sharks, and crocodiles, not to mention the many hundreds of bird species that inhabit the area.

The Great Barrier Reef is a haven for divers who go to explore its spectacular underwater scenery and the sea creatures they come across. But even if you are not a diver, you can go snorkeling, swimming, or just laze on one of the many pristine beaches, of which the area has hundreds of wonders

For a really special experience, head out in a glass-bottomed boat to see the underwater world from the surface. Or head to the skies in a plane to get an unbeatable view from the air.

Sydney Harbor

Australia is not just a country of natural wonders, as Sydney Harbor clearly shows. Sydney is a fantastic city in its own right, but this is the highlight. Of course the most noticeable feature is the Sydney Opera House, which is one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. Simply getting an up-close view of the building is enough, but you should also head inside to catch a performance for an unbeatable experience.

The other main feature of the harbor is the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Tours are available, and if you really want to get adventurous you can even climb it with the help of an official guide. The top of the bridge offers a fantastic view of the surrounding area, and if you happen to be in town for New Year’s Eve you’ll be able to witness a spectacular firework show.

These are just three of the major attractions in Australia-but there’s many more. If you are planning a trip down under then apply for your passport now! Applying for your passport is quick, easy, and convenient, and then you too can enjoy all that Australia has to offer.

10 places to visit this year

May 27, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Cheapflights.com has come up with a list of much needed places to visit. This list seemed strange to me until I realized that they were talking about great deals since the travel market is soft right now and the opportunity to travel to far away or expensive places is attainable by many more people than usual.

What do you think of this list? Would you be interested in traveling to any of or all of these places?

I’ve compiled a list of some of the more family-friendly destinations that you should consider more closely this year, mainly because all of these places now are within reach financially:

1.    Hawaii
: Yes, it is a long flight even from the West coast, but once you are there it is so worth it. Last year, when fuel was over $4 per gallon, Hawaii travel was out of reach for many people. It just took too much fuel to fly there and thus added extra cost.

Now that fuel is 58 percent less than it was last year, airfares have dropped. If you have to pick one island, I highly recommend Kauai (although you can’t go wrong on the other islands). Kids will love playing in tide pools, seeing Waimea Canyon, and will be mesmerized by Wailua Falls. That is, of course, if you can get them to leave the beaches long enough to explore the rest of the island.hawaii-beach

2.    Las Vegas: Take advantage of cheap airfare deals to Las Vegas and then head off in the opposite direction to explore the desert. Check out Hoover Dam (30 miles away); Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (20 miles away); Grand Canyon (about 200 miles away); Zion National Park (170 miles away); even Scottsdale, AZ is nearby. In Las Vegas, there are options other than whether to play blackjack or poker.

3.    London: Cheapflights’ world headquarters is in London. Every time I go there, I always think how much I want to bring my family on the next trip. For such a big reputation, London feels small when you’re there.

It is a city easily walked and has a great mix of historical sites (Buckingham Palace, Big Ben) and more interactive activities (London Eye, Taussaud’s Wax Museum). Restaurants and hotels are equally ample. Plus, the value of the dollar has strengthened dramatically in Europe making it even more affordable once you are there.

cruise-in-port4.    Cruise: (Full disclosure: I’ve never actually been on a cruise but I have always been interested in trying it.) With some of the great deals we are seeing now, this just might be the year to hit the high seas.

The nice thing about a cruise is there is truly something for everyone. The vacation can be whatever you want to make it and in most cases, you stop at three or four ports so there’s a nice variety of sites to see.

Many cruise lines are offering package deals that include airfare and upgrades to more premium cabins.  I couldn’t offer a top 10 list without this making the cut.

5.    Australia: It used to be really expensive to fly, you would have had a tough time finding a good deal from the U.S. to Australia. It was just too far and required too much jet fuel to get there.

What a difference a year makes. Today, Australia airfares range from $900 – $1000 per round-trip ticket, which makes this one of the more expensive places on this list. However, these are actually great deals for Australia.

The point of this list was to stretch the boundaries and show you how to afford something that may have been out of reach before. Once there, Sydney offers excellent museums and cultural activities. Head to the Gold Coast for wonderful beaches and some neat water parks.

6.    Seattle: Ask anyone what the weather is like in Seattle and they will mention rain. It does rain there, but it’s actually not nearly as bad as is portrayed. Seattle has a laid back attitude that makes stress and anxiety a thing of the past.

Explore Pike Place Market, take advantage of the many parks throughout the city, see the Space Needle, or rent some kayaks and explore Puget Sound. If you have some extra time, you could set your sights on Vancouver, home of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

7.    Chicago: It’s a quick and direct flight to Chicago for most. For the price of a taxi ride, spring for a flat rate and catch a limo ride from the airport to the city, which will excite adults and kids. Once in the city, you don’t need to rent a car – you can either walk or take the El (subway) to most of the popular sights.

Rent bikes to ride along the shore of Lake Michigan; visit Navy Pier, or spend time in the world class museums. Head out to Wrigley for classic old-time baseball. But most of all, make sure you leave room for the best deep dish pizza you will ever have.

8.    San Francisco: Ok, this one is for my East Coast contingent. Not only have airfares come down dramatically, but you have several more airline options at your disposal as JetBlue and Virgin America expand their offerings.

Take your kids to Alcatraz, ride the cable cars, and explore the recently developed water front (not Fisherman’s Wharf which is very touristy). Rent bikes and ride over the Golden Gate Bridge. You have a ton of hotel options at your disposal from big name chains to boutique smaller properties. A good airfare in 2008 ran around $400 round-trip per person. This year, you’ll pay closer to $250. How’s that for affordable?

Cat in the hat ride universal9.    Orlando: I hesitated with this one, I really did. Many parents don’t look forward to a visit to Disney while almost every kid would jump at the chance. I get why, believe me, I do.

However, with the Orlando flight and hotel deals that abound (many including park admission as well), a trip to Orlando definitely makes sense. I have three kids under 9 years old and the wonderful Disney marketing machine has made an impact.

I know firsthand how badly kids want to visit. Why pay more once the recession ends?

10.    Ireland: It use to feel like stepping way back in time when I visited Ireland 15 years ago. Today, my brother lives there so I’ve been quite a few times.

Although the major cities have stepped into the 21st century, you can still feel the old world charm when you visit the outlying countryside. True, I have a free place to stay when I visit (and no, I am not divulging my brother’s address), which helps contain my costs.

However, Melanie recently booked a trip to Ireland for the summer – the notoriously peak-travel season – and found great rates on hotels in top cities.

For only $92/night, she nabbed a one-bedroom suite along Ireland’s West Coast. The hotel has an equestrian farm on site for horseback riding, and is only a few miles from one of the most breathtaking sites in the world: the Cliffs of Moher.

Rent a car (they drive on the opposite side then we do in the US so be careful!) and drive to Kinsale which is one of the prettiest seaside towns I have ever seen.

Head up north and tour the Ring of Kerry on your way to Galway. (Another hotel deal: Melanie booked a room at a bed-n-breakfast in Galway Center for $80/night.) On your way back, leave some time to explore Killarney which is beautiful, as well. Your kids will love the outdoor activities Ireland has to offer and you will love the slower pace (and the fresh Guinness for lunch…or maybe that was just me).
