Safety Tips for Traveling Abroad

March 20, 2008 by admin Leave a Comment

Traveling abroad is exciting, but you need to take appropriate precautions to make sure your vacation goes smoothly. This article outlines how to make your vacation stress-free, safe, and fun.

Keep an emergency credit card on your person. This means in your pocket, not your purse or briefcase. If you are mugged or otherwise lose your money, you will still have a way to pay for necessary items and travel.

Carry both cash and travelers checks. The advantage of travelers checks is that they are replaceable. If you lose travelers checks or they are stolen, the bank will replace them. Travelers checks are not universally accepted, so carrying some cash is necessary as well.

Keep a note of where your country’s embassy or consulate is located. Also keep the phone number of these places. If you are traveling to a country where your country does not have an Embassy or consulate, find out in advance which one you should go to in case of emergency. For instance, if you are from the U.S. and are in a country without a U.S. embassy, you may wish to go to the Australian embassy. Have this information on your person at all times.

If it is safe to do so, keep your passport and valuables in the hotel safe. If you are traveling at budget hotels in seedy areas, it is better to keep your passport on your person. If you are staying in a high-end hotel that frequently caters to foreign guests, it is likely that you can leave your passport and valuables in that hotel’s safe.

Be aware of your surroundings. This means looking at maps of where you are traveling to familiarize yourself with the area prior to travel. Learn the routes to the police department and a hospital or clinic, as well as to your country’s embassy. Pay attention to who is near you, and if you get lost, have a way to get help.

Do not leave your belongings unattended. Carry important things with you or lock them in the hotel safe. If you leave luggage in your hotel room, do not take anything of value with you. This includes personal information. Personal information is as valuable as jewelery; protect it as such.

Before leaving, purchase travel insurance. Your insurance should cover medical needs, provide emergency funds, and cover lost or stolen belongings. You also need to be aware of evacuation protocols. If you are visiting a country that suffers a severe natural disaster while you are there, know how your country plans to evacuate its citizens. People have been stuck in foreign countries after natural disasters grounded all flights in and out. You could be stuck for days, weeks, or even months longer than planned. Plan for evacuation to avoid staying stuck.

With these tips, you can travel overseas, and you do not have to worry about problems because you will be prepared. There are dangers in any location, but being prepared will help you stay safe.

Roadside Emergency Kit Prep Tips

March 19, 2008 by admin Leave a Comment

When traveling by car, you must be sure to be prepared for any accidents or car problems that may arise. The best way to prepare for these events is to pack a kit for roadside emergencies. This is especially important if you are traveling with children or through areas known for extreme conditions. Use the following guide as you pack an emergency kit for your car.

Make sure that you pack road flares so that your car will be visible if it is along the road. Also be sure to include jumper cables in your kit. You never know when you are going to have a dead battery, so being prepared is best.

A spare tire that is not in good condition is not going to be any good to you. Many travelers forget to check the condition of the spare tire before hitting the road and when the time comes to use it, they find that it is flat or dry-rotted. Keep a can of Fix-A-Flat in the compartment with the spare tire so you have the option of inflating the tire to get somewhere that is safer than on the roadside to put the spare on.

A flashlight with extra batteries must be included in your kit. You do not want to be stranded on a country road without any light to see where you are going or what you are doing to get the car back on the road.

Pack some energy snacks and bottled water. You may find yourself stranded for long periods of time and you need to have the means to feed yourself and stay hydrated. Be sure to include enough to care for everyone traveling with you for at least three days.

A good first aid kit is essential. Make sure that it includes everything that you might need to tend to cuts and abrasions along the road. It should have instant ice packs, gauze, Neosporin, rubbing alcohol and peroxide among many other things. You can never have too many first aid supplies when in an accident.

Pack enough emergency blankets for everyone that is traveling with you. Even the hottest climates can quickly drop temperature when the sun goes down. If you have limited space in your car, look for the shiny silver emergency blankets that will keep you warm but do not take up much space.

If you are traveling into climates where snow is a possibility, be sure to pack some snow shovels and cat litter or rock salt. You will be glad that you have them if your car slides off the road and gets stuck in the snow.

There is always the chance that you could get stranded along the road while you are traveling by car. The causes of stranding vary from car problems to a multi-car pile up on the Interstate. Being prepared for anything will lessen the anxiety you experience as you make your way from your home to your destination and back. Using this guide is a great way to prepare for any situation you may face during your travels.

Road Trip Preparation Tips

March 18, 2008 by admin Leave a Comment

Road trips are a great way to get out of town and spend time with the people you love. However, they can also be very stressful and uncomfortable for some people, as they do not travel well by car. This is especially true when you are traveling with kids. Use the following guidelines to prepare for the next road trip you take with your family.

One of the most important things you can do prior to leaving home is to have your car serviced. Include an oil change and fluid and have filter checks performed. You want your car running its best while you make your way from your home to your destination.

Check the air in all of your tires. Be sure to check the air and the condition of your spare tire as well as the tires that are on your car. You do not want to have a blow out on the highway and not have a spare tire that is in good enough condition to use to get to a repair shop.

As you are checking the condition of your spare tire, make sure that all of the equipment that you need to change a tire are in your car. This includes a jack, tire iron and maybe a bag to keep your lug-nuts in as you do the change.

Either purchase or pack a first aid kit. Include things like Tylenol or Aspirin, band-aids, peroxide, Neosporin, etc. in the kit.

If your travel takes you through extreme terrain or climates, be sure to pack an emergency kit for the chance that you could end up stranded along the road. Include a shovel, rock salt, blankets, water and protein bars.

Include several stops along the way. You will want to give anyone that you are traveling with the chance to get out of the car and stretch their legs. Map out the rest areas along the way or some restaurants where you can stop, eat and relax for a bit before continuing your journey.

If you are traveling with children or restless adults, bring some sort of entertainment along. Portable DVD players, handheld video games, laptop computers or travel games should do the trick.

Pack small snack bags so you can easily distribute snacks to everyone that might get hungry or bored while you are traveling. Also, pack a small cooler with refreshing drinks that are not caffeinated. You want to be able to quench thirst without making anyone hyper from additional caffeine.

Inform someone that you trust where you are going, the route you are taking and where you will stay once you get there. Also, set a check-in time that you will use to contact this person to make them aware that all is well. It is best to have at least one person at home know where to look for your car if you do not contact them at that certain check-in time.

Have your camera handy. You need to be able to take pictures of an accident scene as soon as it happens. It is also nice to be able to get pictures of the scenery as you make your way to your destination.

Preparing for anything will make your road trip much more enjoyable. Use the tips above to plan for your next road trip and you will have a great time seeing the country on your way to your destination.

Protecting Your Personal Information While Abroad

March 17, 2008 by admin Leave a Comment

Whether you are planning a family trip, romantic getaway or important conference for work, you should take a number of precautionary measures to protect the identity and privacy of yourself and others. You’ve undoubtedly thought about packing a digital camera, laptop, smartphone or PDA; if you are traveling abroad, you will need your passport and other identification. Before you depart, spend a few minutes to familiarize yourself with these guidelines for protecting your personal information while you are away from home.

People are always finding new ways to share their favorite images with friends and family, which is why so many have turned to social media sites to document their lives. Some even use features that automatically upload images from their phone or wireless device the moment the photo is taken. In theory, it works well, but only if your life is truly an open book. Before you depart, double-check your sharing settings and make temporary adjustments if needed. Remember: What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas…unless your photos automatically post to Facebook.

If you are traveling overseas, your passport is an absolute must. However, this doesn’t mean that you should keep it on your person while you sample local restaurants or shop for souvenirs; it’s a risky move. Instead of taking a gamble, lock important documents in the hotel safe, if one is available.

We all like to believe that traveling abroad is 100% safe and immune to criminal activity. Unfortunately, unscrupulous people are in every city, state and country. While you are away from home, safeguard your information by using password protection on all electronic devices, including smartphones, laptops and PDAs.

During and after your trip, keep a close eye on your banking accounts and financial statements. If for some reason you notice a discrepancy or possible act of fraud, a quick response can save you a great deal of trouble down the road. If you sign up for credit report monitoring, you will be alerted almost immediately of suspicious activity.

Unless you are traveling for business reasons, you should carefully consider whether or not to bring your laptop computer. Ask yourself if you plan to use it in your room, or will you be spending more time taking in the sights? You might be surprised what criminals can glean from your laptop: credit card numbers, contact information, bank accounts and other highly private data.

If you decided to leave your laptop at home but find yourself in need of Internet access, exercise caution while using public computers. Many networks automatically log users off at the end of a session, but this is by no means universal. Take a few seconds to verify that you are completely logged off. Ultimately, it’s better safe than sorry.

While many of these guidelines seem somewhat stringent, each one is another way to protect yourself from unfortunate mishaps. Don’t let your dream vacation turn into a nightmare by setting yourself up for dangerous or risky situations. After all, this may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; enjoy it wisely.
