Portola Inn and Suites

June 18, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Last week when our family went to Los Angeles my wife looked around for a motel that would be nice and clean and would be cheap. Cheap is always the way that we go when it comes to family vacations and our accommodations.

We stayed in Buena Park which is really close to Knotts Berry Farm and about 10 minutes or so drive from Disneyland.

Portola Inn and Suites

The motel my wife chose was the Portola Inn and Suites because the location was good enough for us and because it was quite inexpensive. The reviews we found led us to believe that it would also be quite clean and it included breakfast.

Well the hotel is a bit of a ways from the airport and we got in early so after having some lunch and doing just a bit of driving around we checked to see if we could get in early, fortunately we were able to checkin a couple of hours early and the hotel was clean and comfortable.

One of the real problem with motels is that since there is no hallway and your door is facing the parking lot the carpets are always, always, dirty and we wore our Vessi waterproof sneakers in the room most of the time.

Nice Hotel Overall

We found that the room was pretty quiet, we did not really hear any street noise and besides the earthquake that we experienced the morning before we left the beds were very comfortable and let us sleep well, plus the construction was very nice, the rooms had wooden details, you were able to see how the construction workers made sure that the baseplate or shoe of the saw sat flat on the wood before making the cut .

The breakfast at the Portola Inn and Suites is interesting. Everyone that is excited about a continental breakfast included with a room has not stayed in many motels. This is no different. There is coffee, wrapped danish pastries, bread, jam, and some oranges and apples. Just enough breakfast to get us going but not enough to hold us until lunch. There is lots of fast food and a Dennys down the street though. The puzzle room are a great way to celebrate, regardless of the occasion! Whether you’re young or old, you’ll have a blast solving our intricate puzzles and trying your luck with our escape rooms. PuzzleWorks will be by your side as you plan your party celebration for your friends, coworkers, or family members.

There is a pool and hot tub but it was not working for the week we were there as it was only mid March and no one really expects you to use the pool in California this early in the year.  My son tried to swim but the pool was unheated and a little cold.

finally the staff. I think that the Portola Inn and Suites is owned and run by a family the man and wife and their baby that we dealt with any time we went into the office were great, their office was amazing, so stylish with the best  furniture from www.office-furniture.com.au, very friendly and very helpful. Although they were able to help most of the time things like the pool and smallish breakfast there was not much they could do about, and in the souvenir store there were many gifts and even more customizable lovies for babies perfect for our family.

The only drawback to the Portola Inn and Suites is the location for some people. We spent one day and Disneyland and did not go to Knotts Berry Farm so we had a fair amount of driving to get to Hollywood and the beaches, we knew this and had a GPS and cheap rental car so it was fine. The room although clean had a dirty bathtub, I think someone had burned it with cigarettes years ago (yuck) but the carpet and walls and bed were in good shape so who knows.

I think the next time we go to California we will try to stay closer to the beach but if you are looking for a fairly cheap motel and have rented a car for your trip the Portola Inn and Suites is quite good and although not really close to Disneyland is good if you can not get anything closer to Disney.

DisneyWorld Animal Kingdom Lodge

January 1, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Disneyland Animal Kingdom lodge is one of the high end resorts that Disney has onsite, or rather close to the sites of all the parks. Features of DisneyWold Animal Kingdom loge include concierge services, three restaurants, pool, stores, lounge areas, buses to all of the Disney Parks and best of all very close overlooks for all sorts of african animals within just a few feet.

Our Arrival at Disneyworld Animal Kingdom Lodge

Disneyworld Animal Kingdom LodgeDisney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge was a  bout a 30 minute drive from the Orlando airport and it was a logn day travelling from Calgary out to Orlando. When we arrived on site to the Animal Kingdom Lodge we were greeted by one of the ladies from the concierge service. We were very thankful to be going to Orlando as part of Childrens Wish (our 13 year old daughter has Kidney Disease inherited from us).

So after a long day of travelling we were quickly checked in and up into our Arusha View room overlooking the Savanna. Even though when we arrived fairly late in the evening we could see giraffes and other animals right off the deck and of course every morning and evening we would see more. I think though the kids were initially most excited that the room had bunk beds for them to fight over (What’s with kids and bunk beds?).

Views from the Animal Kingdom Lodge

There are views of the Savanna not only from the rooms (not all rooms of course) but there are also views from a few different viewing areas. There is a really big viewing area at the back of the resort and there is another great couple ones tucked away by the pool. There always seems to be some kind of wildlife around, we even saw little lizards around the pool and gulls actually landing in the pool (staff don’t seem to like that so much 🙂 )

The animals are always showing up or leaving based on their own daily schedules as the area around the resort is huge so at different times we saw giraffes, gazelles, zebras, flamingos, ostriches, and lots of strange birds. Absolutely amazing to say the least.

Access to the Disneyworld Parks

giraffe animal kingdom lodge1We had access to parking at the parks but often it was easier just to take a shuttle. The shuttles are free between the Disney Parks and there is a great system and schedule that seems to take you too and from Animal Kingdom Lodge to each of the parks. The only problem we found was trying to get back late at night after a park had closed. We found it best to take the shuttle for half a day to a park and then go back to the hotel to cool off in the pool, and then drive back to a park in the evening so that we would not have to fight crowds to leave. The Disney staff is fantastic but of course there is only so much they can do when thousands of people are trying to leave all at once and every kid is tired.

Restaurants at Animal Kingdom Lodge

We didn’t really eat at any of the restaurants at the resort as they were a bit pricey for us. The food is fantastic and fairly formal restaurants don’t seem to work very well with our crazy kids. There was one eating area that was great though, The Mara is a more casual, grab your own food kind of area where you just get your food and is more of a quick service/casual area without wait staff. I was able to get popcorn for the kids from there and juice which came in really handy for us.

The other restaurants are the Jiko, which is a formal finer dining type restaurant, and the Boma, which I now wish I would have gone to as it is a buffet style restaurant with authentic African foods to try to your hearts content.

Animal Kingdom Lodge Amentities

Disneyworld Animal Kingdom Lodge poolThe pool needs a place of its own. Wow, what an experience. The pool is huge and has a special little waterslide for the kids, three lifegaurds, some games for the kids and is open from morning to really late. My kids swam in the pool at some point everyday except one and loved it.

There is a full gym (which I never used) that was well stocked. Had all the weights and machines needed and was really clean. I find when I travel on business that a lot of hotel gyms are small, dirty and really an afterthought  but the gym here was big and had a lot of room between equipment which is super if you have anything left in your legs after all the walking at a Disney Park.

And finally the hotel stuff. We had Wifi in the room which is really important when you have kids and a very connected family, the concierge people were fantastic and seemed to have lots of info for what to do and where to go even when the questions are absolutely not Disney related (Where’s WalMart, target, and cheap fast food?) and always friendly with the kids.

Location to other stuff

Disneyworld Animal Kingdom Lodge1One of the problems with the whole Orlando area is that there are so many things to do and see and such a large distance. We started and finished at the airport of course but also went to Universal Studios and Seaworld along with all of the parks. The great thing about the area is that highways do connect everything up which is great.

If you are going to any of the Disney Resorts it is close to drive or shuttle but if you plan to go to Seaworld or Universal I really thing you need a car as it is a long drive (30 minutes or so). Having a rental car also helps if you want to get food or do any shopping around. Within about 10 minutes drive there are a bunch of stores, restaurants and other things to see.

Hope this is good info for you. Our family was absolutely blown away by the area, the hotel, the staff, and the amenities of the DisneyWorld Animal Kingdom Lodge and although it is a pricey place it really offered us everything we could possibly want.

Go to Disney land for free on your birthday

April 5, 2012 by admin 3 Comments

Everyone who visits a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park on their birthday in 2009 can get in free, as Disney Parks embraces a newly identified family travel trend called “celebration vacations”.

In this new national trend, Canadian families are hitting the road to mark life’s special occasions – birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, reunions and more – with a “celebration vacation”. In 2009, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts will lead this growing trend with new entertainment and services that allow guests to turn their personal milestones into magical Disney experiences.

And to kick it all off – a first-ever opportunity for guests to receive a free ticket to one of the Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme parks on their birthday in 2009.

“Birthdays are the one occasion that we all share every year,” said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, at an announcement event today. “We thought a free birthday ticket would be the icing on the cake as we extend this new ‘celebration vacation’ trend to Disney Parks.” [Read more…] about Go to Disney land for free on your birthday

Disneyland Enjoyment Tips

March 18, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

We went to Disneyland for the second time last week. We went a couple of years back when the kids where four and eight and now they are 6 and 10. Years ago the visit to Disneyland was a bit different than last week, we stayed in a motel down the street, we stayed for three days and we visited in the height of Summer.

This time the visit to Disney was different.

We really had a good time but this time it seemed really expensive and we had a time crunch. Here was the cost

  • $14 for parking
  • $280 for entrance fee
  • $75 for lunch
  • $20 for dinner

That may seem really expensive and it kind of was. For many families Disneyland is really inaccessible because of the price and last week our trip to Disneyland was more of a side trip in our holiday so the price seemed pretty shocking.

Let’s get away from what we paid and what we saved as well along with some fun tips [Read more…] about Disneyland Enjoyment Tips
