Hawaii

Best Oahu beaches for kids

November 12, 2014 by admin 2 Comments

This post started out as a warning. while in Hawaii and Waikiki we found that some of the beaches were terrible for kids and others were really good.

There can be a lot of time wasted looking for beaches that are great for kids when in reality probably the best beach on the island is within walking distance from your hotel.

Best Oahu beaches for kids

The beach that I find the best first of all is the stretch of beach in front of the big pink hotel. The hotel is the Royal Hawaiian and in front of the hotel is a busy but pretty stretch of beach that is perfect for kids.

The reason that the beach here is perfect is that the waves are smaller but are still exciting for the little ones and in walking out the water gets about five feet deep and then gets shallow again around 200 feet from the beach.

I would walk with my four year old son out to the slightly deep water and then carry him for a bit and then I could put him back down to run around in water that was only a foot or two deep.

Going further down to the east on Waikiki beach will take you to the wading area of Waikiki beach. This area is great as there is a big cement wall that works as a wave break, the water is a little cloudy but it is a great place to watch the kids as there are no waves and it is contained so you do not lose the kids too easily.

This beach gets no surf and the water is shallow. There is some coral around so it is best to reign in the little ones and the oder kids can just swim around for hours (remember to cover everyones backs with lots of suntan lotion..even when they fight it) and the only real drawback is that there is an entrance fee to get in.

On the other hand there are some other beaches that you may want to stay away from.

North of Hanauma Bay is a beach called Sandy Beach, nice name but huge waves.

When we were at Sandy Beach the waves were enough to drown me and the kids were not able to go swimming at all as the waves broke right at shore. The kids both liked watching the waves crashing but after an hour of not being able to go into the water the became bored and we had to move on.

Having a list of engaging ideas in your back pocket might mean the difference between them wanting to pack it in after only an hour at the beach and not being able to drag them home after several.

The following activities are fun and also help kids develop their basic movement skills.

1. How Low Can You Go?

Nothing beats good-old digging in the sand. Get your kids to see how deep of a hole they can dig and when they’ve dug as far as they can, see if an adult can fit in the hole or see how long it takes to fill the hole with water. Please remember to fill in any holes you dig in the sand when you’re done playing for the safety of other people using the beach.

Required: shovels and varying levels of attention span

Skills developed: lifting and lowering objects

2. Beach Frisbee Golf

Substitute a plain old game of frisbee with frisbee golf. Set up targets using items you brought to the beach (could be a picnic blanket, an umbrella, a towel, or you could even dig a hole in the sand to aim at). Take turns trying to throw your frisbee as close to the target as you can. Make sure smaller kids are allowed to stand closer to the target than the bigger ones to keep frustration levels to a minimum.

Required: at least one frisbee

Skills developed: throwing

3. Let’s Go Fly A Kite

I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a child who doesn’t love to fly a kite. Even if there isn’t a lot of wind, kids can run with kites and have a great time watching them fly behind them. Kites can be purchased in toy stores, dollar stores, or made by kids before the beach visit.

Required: a store-bought or home-made kite

Skills developed: running

4. Beach Volleyball

Depending on the ages of the kids playing, a real volleyball and net can be set up. For the smaller set, a beach ball and a towel are great substitutes. Try to count the number of times you can get the ball back and forth.

Required: a ball (some beaches have nets set up)

Skills developed: volleying, throwing

5. Treasure Hunting

When looking for metal detectors for kids (or even for adults), the task at hand may falsely appear simple when in actual sense is a bit nerve-wrecking and confusing. There are very many devices out there and as you may have noticed, election is not always easy, getting some guidance from metaldetectordirect.com is always a secure option.

Required: beginner metal detector

Skills developed: patience, attention

North-Shore-OahuThe North Shore is famous for waves and is mostly not at all good for kids because of this excerpt for one tucked in spot Waimea Bay.

Waimea Bay is great as the cove keeps the biggest of the waves at bay.

You need to get to Waimea bay early though as the parking lot is a bit small and there is not a lot of other parking areas available.

Kailua is another spot on the north east of Oahu that has great beaches and seems to be good. Because of the spot on the island it can be a little windy and as a really long beach in spots it can be steep to the water.

The waves can be bigger which is fun and most older kids would have a great time in the water.

So my best advice to anyone is to start at the pink hotel and the beach in front of it. As you are going down the alleyway between hotels to get to the beach it is really hard to turn down the shaved ice vendor sitting there, I know my daughter never let us get by there without us buying her and her brother a shaved ice.

Eating Tips in Hawaii and Waikiki

March 9, 2012 by admin Leave a Comment

Eating in Hawaii is a bit of a battle. For most people the food is either too light, like shaved ice, or way to heavy like burgers at Chilis.

There is no shortage of food to be had in Waikiki. There is the famous Perrys Smorgy on Kuhio Drive that has a different buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is said to be good once on a trip but twice may be a bit much. There is everything from low end fast food to some of the best restaurants in the country.

Traveling with kids means that you may have to eat some fast food although I do know of a family whos kids got sick on a trip from eating nothing but McDonalds. The best bet is to vary your meals and try to eat like you do at home.

First of all try to eat a great meal for breakfast. We found that the IHOP on Kuhio was a little too much food for the kids and if you can not bring it back to the room for later or tomorrow then the food is mostly wasted. Actually the best meal to eat out is dinner because if you have a lot of leftovers it is easy enough to bring back to the hotel and huck it into the fridge.

Lunch for our trip varied a lot. If you are at the beach it is easy enough to find a hot dog and hamburger but on some days when we got out really early the kids were drained and wanted to get back into the hotel room for a nap and some quiet time by the pool. Hawaii Vacation Things to do

September 18, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

Hawaii is a gorgeous place for any family to visit for vacation.  The fiftieth American state, Hawaii consists of the islands of Hawaii (the Big Island), Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau, plus many smaller islands and islets.  Of these islands, the Big Island, Maui, and Oahu are probably the most popular vacation destinations for family vacations to Hawaii.

Here are a few ideas to get you started when planning your Hawaiian vacation:

Surf Family Style

During your family vacation to Hawaii, you can get surfing lessons on Oahu’s north shore from Surf Hawaii 4 U.  Professional surf instructors can teach your whole family how to surf while on your vacation to Hawaii.  Group lessons with at least three people participating start at $300 for a three-hour surfing lesson.  So catch a wave, cause surf’s up, dude!

Visit the Volcanoes

You probably already knew that volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean formed Hawaii.  But did you also know that your family could take a helicopter tour over the still-active volcanoes on the Big Island while on your family vacation to Hawaii?  Or, if your family would rather see the volcano from the ground, Big Island Volcano Tours will take your family on a volcano and waterfall sight-seeing tour.  Make sure your family wears comfortable shoes for walking or hiking, and that all the members of your family will be happy walking at least a mile to see Hawaii’s lava flows and rainforest’s.

Learn about Culture

To educate your family about Hawaii’s unique culture and history, visit the Polynesian Cultural Center during your family vacation on Hawaii’s island of Oahu.  Your family can enjoy the Polynesian Night Show there, learn the history of the luau, and the younger members of your family can attend one of the Ohana Adventures – shows and hands-on activities designed specifically for children.

Stargaze

Atop Mauna Kea, a snow-capped Hawaiian mountain on the Big Island, your family can visit the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy.  Visit at night for a stargazing tour with your family on your vacation to Hawaii, where you can use one of the telescopes already atop the mountain to pick out famous constellations, nebulae, distant galaxies, and other glimpses of the heavens.  Astronomy center workers are available to answer your family’s questions and point out where to look for certain stars.

A family vacation to Hawaii is sure to impress both the kids and the adults in your family.  Whether you are interested in the unique culture, ecosystem, and volcanic activity, or you just want to hit the beach, Hawaii is a family vacation crowd-pleaser.

Hanauma Bay – How to see it all

September 12, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

Hanauma Bay
Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay is one of the great natural places that has been turned into a tourist spot that I have ever been to. Traveling to Hanauma Bay takes a few minutes but is an all day adventure that everyone in the family will love. There is very shallow water that you can stand in, no waves and lots and lots of fish to see in the water with just a mask and snorkel. To me this is a giant aquarium that is very safe, easy to swim in and gives you memories that will last a lifetime.

Where is Hanauma Bay?

Hanauma Bay is about 30 minutes east of Waikiki and is a coral bay that is millions of years old but is perfectly suited for people to enjoy tropical fish in a wild setting and still be completely safe. You will be able to find all of the services that you need including food, soft drinks, masks and snorkels and even liefeguards if you get a little disoriented in the water.

There is a cost to go to Hanauma Bay and it is a bit of a commute from the hotels of Waikiki. On the main strip of hotels on Kuhio Avenue you have to find an eastbound bus 22 which runs every 20 minutes or so and this will take you to Hanauma Bay. The bus trip takes about 30 minutes or so.

One thing to realize before you take the time to go out to Hanauma Bay is that they are closed on Tuesdays and it is best to go earlier in the morning as it does get full later in the day and you will not be able to get down to the beach. There is a cost to enter the beach $5 per adult and children under 13 are free. Also there is a shuttle down to the beach from the info center for $1 and back up for $2. Food is essential to bring I think. We forgot to pack a lunch and spent $25 for hot dogs, chips, and drinks for the four of us.

Snorkeling is actually a very easy thing to do. In the salt water of Hanauma Bay you can get your mask on and have the snorkel sticking out of the water and you just float along (stay away from touching the coral) and just admire the fish. The water in most of the area is less than 6 feet deep and acutally my eight year old daughter was having trouble with the snorkeling part so she would just squat down and hold her breath underwater and saw litterally 100s of fish in almost no time.

There are plenty of fish of various sizes to see and they range from little 2 inch long fish to longer 12 or 15 inch long fish in other schools just swimming around. One of the things that some area of the world do is bring food to attract the fish, this is not allowed at Hanauma Bay but hte fish are very easy to see and are completly used to people so they will swim up to you and kiss your fingers if you hold them out.
