Choosing a Ship Deck for Family Vacation

Choosing the deck that your cabin is on can be an important decision in adding to your cruise enjoyment. Different cruise ships have many floors, or decks, and not all decks are the same. The upper-most decks on a cruise ship are usually the most desirable, but even if you cannot afford to be on one of those prestigious decks, the good news is that is doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

When choosing a deck for your cruise adventure it is wise to look at the location of your cabin on the deck you are considering. Before committing yourself to a particular deck, from the ship’s layout pay attention to what is located where. Is the elevator shaft or engine room in close proximity to your cabin? Does the deck you choose have the disco on it that may be noisy late into the night? Does this deck contain the children’s activity area which may be noisy during the day when you wish to nap?

The higher the deck your cabin is on usually indicates a higher price tag. The upper deck cabins are typically larger and better appointed, and come with larger windows or portholes. Some even have patio doors that lead onto a private balcony. They are usually bright and sunny (depending on the weather) and quite pleasant.

The upper decks can also be closer to more of the amenities that you may wish to use and therefore be more convenient to you. For instance, your cabin could be on or close to the swimming pool deck where you would have closer access to enable you to change or use your own bathroom more easily, you can even Buy an Oak Vanity Unit here and take it with you to the place you travel, this way you have more space to put things. If you wish to be close to a particular activity area, restaurant or event, then paying attention to what is on each deck could provide that indulgence for you.

Also, an upper deck location provides a great birds-eye view of your surroundings, whether you have a large porthole window in your cabin or a private balcony.

But, there are also downfalls to an upper deck choice that you may wish to consider.

The movement of the ship is increased on the upper levels. The lower cabins near the water’s edge are more stabilized, so if you are prone to sea-sickness or affected greatly by the ship’s movement, perhaps a lower deck may be more appropriate for your deck choice.

Also, with the upper deck cabins you may tend to get a bit more noise. Some of the cabins located on the upper decks can be close to a casino, restaurant, disco or all-night bar, which may be noisy. Also, during the day there will be more activity passing by your windows or door by other passengers on their way to activities located on that deck, which also may cause the noise level to increase.

Not only do lower deck choices provide more stability with the ship’s movement, but when you have an outside cabin, you can also get a great view. Looking out of your cabin porthole at the water provides you with a unique point of view. You can sit in your cabin and be at eye-level with the waves rushing by, which can truly be a beautiful experience.

So, before choosing a deck for your cruise adventure, do not only consider the price tag associated with it. Consider what you require and expect on your vacation. If you want a more stable environment with less activity, it may be more appropriate for you to choose a lower deck. If you want more comforts, such as a balcony or wanting to be closer to the activities, perhaps an upper deck may be more suitable.
