Commuting around Oahu and Waikiki

May 20, 2008 by admin Leave a Comment

There are a lot of choices for commuting around Oahu and especially Waikiki and I have used a few of them.

First of all you can run the whole gamut from Cabs to rental cars to buses and in fact there are two kinds of buses even within Waikiki.

First of all is the cabs, if you want to get around from the airport to the Waikiki hotel area you can only take either a cab or perhaps a tour bus. The cabs cost between 35 and 40 American dollars and the tour buses that shuttle people to and from the hotels from the Honolulu airport are about $12 per person. As a family of four we were able to pull off a deal with a bus driver for $30 to get to our hotel for all of us – great deal I thought.

Once you are in Waikiki there are plenty of buses to take you around the area. Some hotels offer a free bus that takes you to and from the Ala Moana shopping center. This can also be done for a $2 city bus trip. We went to the mall a few times and it is very close to the WalMart which is a great place to get food, suntan lotion and other things that you may need for your stay in Waikiki. The cost in Waikiki for almost anything is overpriced to say the least.

City buses actually go right around the island for $2 so if you wanted to spend the day on the bus you could go right around the island or even take the bus just to Hanauma Bay for the day. We caught a ride out to Hanauma Bay with an enterprising Hawaiian with a minivan and this was a quick and fun way to see some of the south of Oahu but coming back that day we took a city bus and except for the wait it was a great experience, the buses in Waikiki are very clean and we never ran into any troublesome people at all. Finding the Magnum PI House

May 18, 2008 by admin 19 Comments

Magnum PI was one of the great fun to watch shows of the 80s. My wife used to watch an episode everyday in reruns while looking after the babies.

Anyway the show Magnum PI really was filmed in Hawaii and if you go north on Oahu you can find the house that they used to film Tom Selleck in all his hairy chested greatness.

The picture to the left is a picture of the entrance to the house.

This is important to know as the house is unmarked and very hard to find we thought.

There is always confusion about where the house is and we saw a listing in the Lonely Planet guidebook for Hawaii that said what general area to look for the house.

After we got back from out trip to Hawaii we had a lot more luck in seeing exactly where the house is and we got pictures of the wrong house while we were there 🙂

Anyway the location of Magnums house on Oahu is close to the Waimanalo Beach Park on the Kalanianole Highway.

You take the highway between the beach park and a pier close to the Kaupo Beach Park.

It is easy to miss the area but you just have to keep driving the 5 minutes or so between these locations and you will find a string of houses.

Pull over and get out of the car and just walk down the string of houses and you should be able to find the house. The map below should help.

For more info there are two great resources on the internet. For actual info on how to find the house you can go to finding Magnum PI house (which includes lots of pics) and for more info on the history of Robin’s Nest you can go to Magnum Mania.

As you embark on a new trip you are going to want to take some ideas into consideration. You have to understand that not every trip goes as pleasant as you want it to go. Therefore you are going to have to take precaution to prepare yourself for whatever may come. Prepare yourself for road trips with the information from this article.

If you decide to take a long trip in your vehicle then make sure that you car can make the trip. Get your vehicle checked out by a mechanic and let them know your plans. They can give you advice on whether or not it is a wise idea to take your vehicle on a long trip.

When you plan out your trip make sure that you have emergency items ready for anything. You are going to want to make a kit or bag with first aid items such as lights, bandages and water. This is something you are going to want to do if you find yourself traveling at night, because you never know where you might wind up or what might happen.

Even if you have the approval from your mechanic to take a long trip you still might consider taking tools with you to fix any minor problems that might come up. If you know how to fix a overheating car or how to change a tire then these are expenses you can avoid paying someone else to do. This can save you a lot of money and time while you embark on your adventures.

Traveling long distances can mean you are going to expose your vehicle to an assortment of ordeals. You might lose your keys or pop a tire that you can’t fix. Make sure that you have roadside assistance and that you have the number for roadside assistance. It is always a good idea to have all of your options open to you so that you can deal with any situations that might arise.

Double check to see that you have all important information with you. Take any passports with you just in case you think you might cross the border into another country, keep your license on you, and make sure you have all your insurance information with you and your vehicle at all times. You can run into a lot of complications if you do not plan properly.

Head to a mechanic and make sure the fluids in your vehicle are fresh. If you are going to travel for long distances at a time then make sure that you routinely service your vehicle throughout your travels. You want your vehicle to stay in tip top shape so do not get lazy. Being lazy can cost you a lot of money in the long run.

You may be excited to start your travels now. You should be excited and ready to tackle any obstacles that get in the way of you and your adventures. Have fun with your travels and remember the advice from this article.

Traveling Safely Among The Seas

May 15, 2008 by admin Leave a Comment

There are so many ways to travel but there is so little time to complete all of your travels. If you want to experience life to the fullest though then you are going to have to experience all kinds of traveling. One of the funnest ways to travel is to travel among the seas as much you can. When you venture out on to the open sea the possibilities are endless for you.

If you are going on a cruise then make sure that you ask the staff on the cruise ship to show you where the life boats are and how to use them. In case of an emergency you want to be one of the people who takes initiative that knows how to use the life boats. You might be a hero if something goes wrong, but hopefully nothing bad has to happen. Just keep in mind to play it pre cautious and you should be fine.

When someone falls off the ship alone no one notices and this can be bad. When no one knows that there is someone who has fallen off the ship then they get left behind. One of the scariest feelings in the world is being stranded on the open sea. So make sure that you are always around someone so that either of you can inform the crew members if one of you goes missing.

As you go ashore take other people with you. The best way to stay safe is to be in numbers. Do not do anything alone when you are dealing with water. Water is unpredictable and can cause you plenty of harm, even if you are comfortable with water and are not scared about it.

Do not let any strangers come into your room when you are on a cruise ship. You never know who goes on the cruise ship with you and you want to be as safe as you can. Prevent any situations from occurring by being safe and lock all of your doors.

Have fun on your trip for sure, but do no be reckless. Keep your cool and stay in control. You can either be left vulnerable if you drink a lot or you can act out of line. Manage how much you drink so that you can function if anything bad was to happen on the ship. If something bad happens to the ship then you might be too intoxicated to do anything about it. You also do not want to wake up hungover every day, enjoy your stay instead of waking up drunk every morning.

Your travels over the ocean should not feel scary or mysterious for you any longer. You know what you should be doing when you are on a cruise. Save your money and plan ahead. This is the best route to take when you are planning to go on a cruise ship. Good luck and have fun on your future cruise ship travels, just be sure to share your experiences with all your friends and family.

Traveling on the Cheap: Budget-friendly Traveling Tips

May 14, 2008 by admin Leave a Comment

When you get the urge to travel, but find yourself low on funds, check out these tips for traveling on a shoestring. Food, lodging, and transportation are all areas where you can save cash during your trip.

Bundling for Discounts

It can be cost-effective to purchase a bundled vacation package that includes flight and hotel or theme park tickets with lodging. When checking out this option, make sure you learn the cost of each bit separately as well as together. It is also beneficial to check several sources. You may find a better deal through an online travel site than from “authorized” websites. Do also run a quick search to make sure that other customers are generally happy with the bundled deals they received.

Check Foreign Exchange Rates

When traveling abroad, you will need to exchange your money for the local currency. Exchange rates change constantly, and the rate you are quoted from one bank is not going to be the same as rates from other banks. Do a bit of rate shopping to find the best rate, and be aware that when you exchange back to your home currency, the rate may have changed.

Cook

Instead of eating out for every meal while traveling, plan to cook some meals yourself. Your motel may have a small microwave and cooler, or you may wish to bring a hotplate in your luggage. You can bring some cooking ingredients with you, but shopping locally for your food can be an adventure in itself. Shopping local markets for the ingredients to a simple home-cooked meal may not only save you money, but also let you see a part of the area that you would otherwise have missed.

Walk

Rather than taking a taxi to a location near you, walk! This is not only a money-saver, it is also a way to enjoy more of the area and get a bit of exercise. Walking does have the inherent risk of passing by a cute boutique that you may not have otherwise noticed, however. Enjoy the boutique, but keep your money in your purse.

Travel Off-Season

Certain days of the week, usually Tuesday and Wednesday, are ideal for getting the best rates for air and rail travel. Traveling to popular tourist destinations is less expensive when you plan your trip for the off-season. Popular summer attractions are less expensive in the winter and less crowded as well. If you must take a vacation during the summer due to school and work schedules, you can save by traveling to a destination where it is off-season. Instead of visiting the Caribbean in the summer, visit Australia. This way you can still find off-season prices since traveling to Australia when it is summer in the U.S. is not as common.

Traveling can seem nearly impossible if your wallet is bare. However, if you adhere to the advice in this article, you will discover that having a great trip is possible even when you are a bit strapped for cash.
