How To Eat Better At Airports

March 14, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

Nutrition conscious travelers have finally been heard. Finding diet foods at an airport is much easier than it used to be.

There are far more healthy choices to grab on the run (or waiting between flights), but your family still has to be selective and choose wisely.

Common Sense – Plan Before The Airport

Eating at airports can be difficult when you are trying to keep your family healthy. Here are some great tipsDo not to arrive at the airport hungry. Whether you’re heading to the airport from your home or a hotel, schedule time to eat ahead of time.

The one way to ensure you don’t ruin your diet while traveling is to bring your own food.

Suggestions include: Energy bars, Nuts: Almonds or cashews, Carrots, celery, cherry tomatoes, whole grain bread with light cheese or peanut butter, Fruit (apple, banana, grapes), Yogurt, unsweetened dried fruits

Hungry and Have Nothing With You At The Airport?

Takeout kiosks/news stand:

  • Fruit: Apples, oranges and bananas as well as cut-up pineapple and watermelon.
  • Hummus: Often found in a snack pack with raw vegetable or pita.
  • Nuts: A great protein boost and easy to carry on the plane. Caution: Be sure your nuts are unsalted and don’t overeat.
  • Oatmeal: Avoid overloading with too much dried fruits, brown sugar or nuts.
  • Salads: They are usually quite fresh (rapid turnover). Beware of the dressing and crispy noodles, croutons or bacon.
  • Sandwiches: Even if pre-made, they can be a good choice, but beware of too much cheese or tuna/ chicken salad with mayonnaise. Plain turkey or chicken can be filling and if you can eat only half of the bread, all the better. And – no – you do not need the bag of chips that comes with the sandwich.
  • Yogurt: More common at airports (both in containers and frozen). Keep it plain without a lot of add on fruits and toppings.

Food Chains Now Have More Healthy Choices

  • Au Bon Pain: Garden Vegetable Soup is good with only 80 calories for a medium-sized serving.
  • Burger King: Select the junior Whoppers or junior sandwiches and skip the fries. Or order a salad (with the dressing on the side).
  • Dunkin Donuts: The egg white veggie flatbread is a great choice and can be even lower than the 280 calories if you have them hold the cheese.
  • McDonald’s: There are a lot of choices from salads and fruits to yogurt parfaits. A small hamburger or chicken sandwiches can also be good.
  • Starbucks: Their oatmeal is only 150 calories. If you must have a bagel, their multigrain is less than 300 calories, but be careful smearing on the cream cheese.
  • Subway: This chain has always been diet friendly, especially if you order your sub small or on a pita pocket. Just be careful with any add ons like cheeses and dressing.
  • Wendy’s: Consider their baked potato (no cheese, butter or sour cream). And a Chili. This is my wife and daughters favorite food from Wendy’s anyway

Yes you can definitely make it through an airport keeping your family healthy and watching your wallet.

Of course, if you got stuck in traffic and have only five minutes to get on the plane for a four-hour flight – enjoy that little bag of the airline pretzels.

How to Find Awesome Travel Deals

March 8, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

Attempting to book solid travel plans is one of the most difficult parts of trying to plan a trip. There are so many resources available that it can become quite overwhelming, which would make planning your vacation much harder.

There are ways to simplify this process and you will learn what they are if you continue to read this article.

Finding Great Travel Deals

Jurassic Park UniversalBooking a vacation through an online travel agent is a great way to save money.

The reason being that many travel agents are privy to deals and discounts that are not advertised.

If you try to go to the airline and/or the hotel directly, you may not be quoted a price that is as low as the one a travel agent might be able to offer you.

Trying to book all of the services that you need for your trip, separately, is not a good idea at all.

While it may seem like you are getting a good deal, you will save a substantial amount of money if you book everything as a bundle.

Whether you need a car, hotel and/or a flight, buying a vacation package will keep much-needed money in your pocket.

All Inclusive Vacations Can Be a Great Deal

Whenever possible, you should book vacation packages that are all-inclusive.

This means that everything will be covered, which means you will not be forced to dish out large amounts of money at multiple times during your trip.

For example, when booking a cruise you have to pay separately for airfare to the departure location. With an all-inclusive trip, the airfare would be included in the rate.

A lot of times when you visit the website of an airline, rental car company or hotel there are areas that showcase great deals.

Look on Travel Websites

There may be a promotion that you know nothing about, and having a look at this part of the website will make you aware of that. Look around a site very carefully before booking anything to make sure that you are not missing out on anything.

Travel websites, like Priceline and Expedia, are very common these days, and rightfully so.

These sites have helped save travelers millions of dollars since they were first introduced. Some of them allow users to quote their own prices, which means that they could end up saving a ton of money.

Reading hotel reviews may not seem like it will save you money, but the reality is, it does.

When you see something that is offered at a drop down price, you can read reviews to see if it is really a deal or if it is all a lesson in “you get what you pay for.”

If you make use of the tips above, you should not have any problems finding deals on travel. You should find the entire booking process to be much simpler and more stress free than normal.

It is not very difficult to get good deals if you know where to go to look for them. This article should show you how to do that quite effectively,

Jet Lag Remedies

November 13, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Looking for jet lag remedies? There are times when you cannot afford to take time out after a trip, but need to be running right off the plane and keep running.

Jet lag can take many forms. Sometimes you are completely wiped out for a day or two after your long distance plane trip.

What Causes Jet Lag?

Other times you may feel fine for the first couple days, but just as you are thinking that it hasn’t got you this time, it hits and messes up a whole week with sleepless nights and drowsy days.

And it’s not just sleep. You may also have digestive disturbances, headaches and possibly some depression. jet lag remedies are as complex as your body is.

The medical term for jet lag is desynchronosis. It happens when there is disturbance to the natural circadian rhythms of the body that tell us when it is time to sleep with the best pregnancy pillow and when it is time to be awake.

These relate to daylight and they are adjustable, so if we cross time zones in a car, for example, we usually do it slow enough for our body to adjust. But a plane can cross several time zones in one day, and that can take a while to recover from.

On average, the recovery time is about 1 day per time zone crossed, although some people find it worse traveling east. A time zone is counted as one hour of time difference.

So traveling from New York to Los Angeles (east to west, 3 time zones) you could expect to recover in 3 days. But traveling from New York to Lima in Peru (north to south), there would be no jet lag at all because they are in the same time zone, even though it’s a longer flight.

Medication Jet Lag Remedies

The main medication that is used as jet lag remedies is the hormone melatonin. This is available without prescription in the USA, although a prescription is required in many other countries. It works best when you are traveling east. Take one dose of melatonin around 6.30 pm the day before your flight, then take it at around 9.30 pm for the first four evenings at your destination.

Non-Medication Jet Lag Remedies

Light can be used as a natural remedy for jet lag. 30 minutes of sunlight or bright light therapy (including use of anti seasonal depression lights) is enough.

Use light therapy in the morning to adjust to a new rhythm where you have traveled east. Use it at midday to mid afternoon if you are having trouble staying awake at those times.

You can also use your diet to help. Generally speaking, protein-rich meals help us to stay awake, while carbohydrates make us sleepy. Check this Jenny Craig vs Nutrisystem review and select the best diet for you.

So avoid carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch while recovering from jet lag, and then have a carbohydrate-rich, low protein dinner around 6 or 7 pm. This should help you sleep at night and can be one of the most effective jet lag remedies.

Best Oahu beaches for kids

November 12, 2014 by admin 2 Comments

This post started out as a warning. while in Hawaii and Waikiki we found that some of the beaches were terrible for kids and others were really good.

There can be a lot of time wasted looking for beaches that are great for kids when in reality probably the best beach on the island is within walking distance from your hotel.

Best Oahu beaches for kids

The beach that I find the best first of all is the stretch of beach in front of the big pink hotel. The hotel is the Royal Hawaiian and in front of the hotel is a busy but pretty stretch of beach that is perfect for kids.

The reason that the beach here is perfect is that the waves are smaller but are still exciting for the little ones and in walking out the water gets about five feet deep and then gets shallow again around 200 feet from the beach.

I would walk with my four year old son out to the slightly deep water and then carry him for a bit and then I could put him back down to run around in water that was only a foot or two deep.

Going further down to the east on Waikiki beach will take you to the wading area of Waikiki beach. This area is great as there is a big cement wall that works as a wave break, the water is a little cloudy but it is a great place to watch the kids as there are no waves and it is contained so you do not lose the kids too easily.

This beach gets no surf and the water is shallow. There is some coral around so it is best to reign in the little ones and the oder kids can just swim around for hours (remember to cover everyones backs with lots of suntan lotion..even when they fight it) and the only real drawback is that there is an entrance fee to get in.

On the other hand there are some other beaches that you may want to stay away from.

North of Hanauma Bay is a beach called Sandy Beach, nice name but huge waves.

When we were at Sandy Beach the waves were enough to drown me and the kids were not able to go swimming at all as the waves broke right at shore. The kids both liked watching the waves crashing but after an hour of not being able to go into the water the became bored and we had to move on.

Having a list of engaging ideas in your back pocket might mean the difference between them wanting to pack it in after only an hour at the beach and not being able to drag them home after several.

The following activities are fun and also help kids develop their basic movement skills.

1. How Low Can You Go?

Nothing beats good-old digging in the sand. Get your kids to see how deep of a hole they can dig and when they’ve dug as far as they can, see if an adult can fit in the hole or see how long it takes to fill the hole with water. Please remember to fill in any holes you dig in the sand when you’re done playing for the safety of other people using the beach.

Required: shovels and varying levels of attention span

Skills developed: lifting and lowering objects

2. Beach Frisbee Golf

Substitute a plain old game of frisbee with frisbee golf. Set up targets using items you brought to the beach (could be a picnic blanket, an umbrella, a towel, or you could even dig a hole in the sand to aim at). Take turns trying to throw your frisbee as close to the target as you can. Make sure smaller kids are allowed to stand closer to the target than the bigger ones to keep frustration levels to a minimum.

Required: at least one frisbee

Skills developed: throwing

3. Let’s Go Fly A Kite

I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a child who doesn’t love to fly a kite. Even if there isn’t a lot of wind, kids can run with kites and have a great time watching them fly behind them. Kites can be purchased in toy stores, dollar stores, or made by kids before the beach visit.

Required: a store-bought or home-made kite

Skills developed: running

4. Beach Volleyball

Depending on the ages of the kids playing, a real volleyball and net can be set up. For the smaller set, a beach ball and a towel are great substitutes. Try to count the number of times you can get the ball back and forth.

Required: a ball (some beaches have nets set up)

Skills developed: volleying, throwing

5. Treasure Hunting

When looking for metal detectors for kids (or even for adults), the task at hand may falsely appear simple when in actual sense is a bit nerve-wrecking and confusing. There are very many devices out there and as you may have noticed, election is not always easy, getting some guidance from metaldetectordirect.com is always a secure option.

Required: beginner metal detector

Skills developed: patience, attention

North-Shore-OahuThe North Shore is famous for waves and is mostly not at all good for kids because of this excerpt for one tucked in spot Waimea Bay.

Waimea Bay is great as the cove keeps the biggest of the waves at bay.

You need to get to Waimea bay early though as the parking lot is a bit small and there is not a lot of other parking areas available.

Kailua is another spot on the north east of Oahu that has great beaches and seems to be good. Because of the spot on the island it can be a little windy and as a really long beach in spots it can be steep to the water.

The waves can be bigger which is fun and most older kids would have a great time in the water.

So my best advice to anyone is to start at the pink hotel and the beach in front of it. As you are going down the alleyway between hotels to get to the beach it is really hard to turn down the shaved ice vendor sitting there, I know my daughter never let us get by there without us buying her and her brother a shaved ice.

Things to see in Costa Rica

November 11, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

There are many popular Costa Rica travel spots that both first time and repeat visitors to this gorgeous Caribbean island may want to see. While the ones listed here are not the only ones, they are definitely some of the best places to be in this country.

Ok, below is a list of some of the most attractive places that you could visit here.

The Rainmaker: This is not an actual human “rainmaker.” The first of its kind in Central America, the Rainmaker is a collection of suspension bridges that sometimes reach as high as 25 stories tall.

While on this aerial walkway, you can have clear and exotic views of the surrounding waterfalls, streams and rainforest trails.

costa-rica-santa-rosa-parkSanta Rosa National Park: This is Central America’s biggest dry tropical rainforest. It is located in the San Elena Peninsula and stretches over 100,000 acres of land.

It offers opportunities for surfing, swimming, enjoying the beautiful wildlife and even the sea creatures.

This one of the very rare places and occasions where big equals beautiful. And you have a variety of opportunities to enjoy the picturesque views that is offered and the natural enjoyment and pleasure that comes with it.

Monteverde Biological Reserve: Of very high altitude, the Monteverde Biological Reserve is one of the must-visit Costa Rica travel spots.

It boasts of more than 100 amphibian species, 400 bird species and 2500 and 100 plant and mammals species respectively.

Whether you are a bird-watching enthusiast or just a naturalist who loves nature, the eight ecological zones of this reserve will provide you with more than enough to enjoy.

Arenal Volcano National Park and Observatory: San Jose offers one of the most spectacular views that you can have (and cherish long after) of your Costa Rican travels. Here you can take about an hour’s walk in the afternoon on lava rocks to see the rare spectacle that a live volcano can be.

The best time to see this is sometime after dark when the sky is lighted mainly by the glowing lava that erupts out of the volcano.

While a lot of Central American countries offer their visitors the pleasure of a lifetime, few offer the opportunity to experience nature wild and beautiful as much as a Costa Rican travel would
