Safety in the Mayan Riviera

January 7, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

Although most of the drug-related violence has been in the northern border region of Mexico, far from the Mayan temples of the Yucatan, the regional cuisine of Oaxaca or the beaches of Baja California Sur, violence has also erupted in tourist destinations, including Acapulco and the state of Michoacan, home to the famous monarch butterfly sanctuaries. Even Cancun’s safety was questioned earlier this year after eight employees of a strip club there were killed when a group of men threw Molotov cocktails into the building in an area not frequented by tourists.

Increasing Safety in Mayan Riviera

To combat the perception that violence has been widespread, tourism officials in Mexico have invested $30 million in advertising and social media initiatives to spread the word that much of the country is safe for tourists.

“Visitors have the right to be well informed,” said Alfonso Sumano, regional director for the Mexico Tourism Board for the Americas. Many of the affected areas, he said, “are very far from the destinations tourists visit.”

The latest travel warning, issued by the State Department in September, urged American citizens to defer unnecessary travel to Michoacan and areas along the northern border, including Tamaulipas, and parts of Chihuahua, Durango and Coahuila, where tourists generally don’t go. Yet, ever cautious, it stated, “violence has occurred throughout the country, including in areas frequented by American tourists.” Visitors were encouraged to stay on main roads in daylight hours and to remain in well-known tourist areas.

Crime Stories Hurt Mexican Travel Industry

All of this has made travel to Mexico a hard sell lately, but travel agents say the negative publicity has also made Mexico among the best values out there as resorts lower rates or add free incentives. When asked where agents are recommending travelers go to get the most for their dollar this year, 70 percent said Mexico, according to Travel Leaders, a major network of agents.

“A lot of clients will come here and say, ‘I’ll go anywhere except Mexico,’ ” said Kate Rosevear, owner of a Travel Leaders agency in Plymouth, Mich. “Quite often we’ll be able to talk them back around to it based on the value.”

The deals include Villa del Palmar Cancun, a new all-inclusive resort in Playa Mujeres with a Greg Norman-designed golf course. It’s offering rates of $142 a person a night — up to 60 percent off. And St. Regis Punta Mita is offering butler service, a third night free, a $50 resort credit per room and a glass of champagne with its Welcome to Paradise deal from $580 a night for stays starting Jan. 11.

Mexican Destinations, the Mexico Villa brand of the rental company VacationRoost, says its villas are far from reported violence, and it’s offering specials of 25 percent to 50 percent off. One deal is Casa del Sol, a four-bedroom, five-bath property on the Pacific Coast in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, where rates have been slashed to $750 a night, from $1,500 for early this month.

Many resorts say safety is at the top of their guests’ minds.

“When our reservations manager receives requests, the first question …is if there has been violence in this area,” said Giorgio Brignone, proprietor of Costa Careyes, a luxury resort two hours south of Puerto Vallarta, which has added free airport transfers to and from Manzanillo. To put jittery travelers at ease, the company’s website highlights the resort’s 24-hour security.

Many travelers are unclear about where the violence has occurred and how it might affect their vacation, Brignone said.

“People don’t realize that there are many regions and areas in the country that are not affected by the violence and drug wars,” he said. “It’s like saying I will not go to Dallas, or New York, because there are problems or riots in Los Angeles.”

Still, there are some tourist destinations travelers should steer clear of, at least for now. “I would not encourage my family to visit Acapulco right now,” said Josh Miller, who lives in Mexico City and is the general director for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean for Control Risks, a risk management firm.

Travelers should also hold off on visits to Michoacan, in central Mexico. The state is a stronghold of La Familia, a drug cartel known for bold ambushes.

Popular resort areas, including Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Ixtapa and Cancun’s resort strip are generally safe for travelers, Miller said, particularly if visitors stay within the resort’s boundaries.

“Mexico is a volatile place,” he said. “You have to have your itinerary planned out quite well, consider transportation and stay abreast of latest developments.”

Some travelers who have been to Mexico before are surprised when friends express safety concerns.

“Everybody was like, `What? You are going to Mexico?’ ” said Tina Youtsey, a dog groomer from Milan, Mich., who went to the Riviera Maya with her teenage daughter last month. “Seriously,” she said, “the drug lords aren’t hanging out at the resort.”

Bedbugs – How To Avoid Bedbugs on Vacation

December 14, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

Bedbugs on Vacation
Bedbugs on Vacation

“Don’t let the bed bugs bite!” Parents may use this phrase in a joking manner when tucking in their kids at night, but there’s an emerging epidemic in of Bedbugs on Vacation in the U.S. and Europe, particularly in big city hotels and apartments.

Most people aren’t concerned of the Bedbugs on vacation problem and don’t think about it until they become infested and are faced with a lengthy, expensive extermination process.

You Are Not Immune from Bedbugs on Vacation

These little critters are rampant in New York City, Seattle, and Vancouver, and other cities like Boston, Toronto, and Chicago are seeing growing outbreaks as well. Even if you live in the most remote areas of the country, you’re still not immune.

All it takes is one to hop in your suitcase while you’re vacationing and suddenly you’ve got an infestation on your hands back home. The best way to deal with them is to not get them in the first place. If you’re planning to travel, there are some simply measures you can take to avoid bringing them home with you.

What Are Bed Bugs?

Bedbugs are small insects (less than a half inch long) that feed off human and sometimes animal blood. They wait until you are asleep to come out. Some people wake up with itchy, red spots after being bitten by bed bugs, but others show no symptoms at all.

Those who show no symptoms have to rely on seeing small dark stains on their bedding to diagnose the problem.

Misconception About Bedbugs and Where they are

A common misconception is that bed bugs exist only in dirty homes and that you will not see bedbugs on vacation. Bed bugs are simply after blood and do not discriminate – they’re just as common in upscale hotels as they are in run-down buildings. They lurk under mattresses, in closets or in cracks in the walls.

If you discover an infestation of bed bugs in your home, you’re in for an arduous extermination process that is likely to involve several of gas or non toxic treatments and require you to keep all the clothes you own in airtight bags for weeks.

How To Avoid Bedbugs on Vacation

When you’re traveling, you can never be too concerned if they will be where you’ll be staying. But you can take precautionary measures. Do an online search to locate a bed bug registry and search their database. Enter the address of the hotel you want to stay at to see if there are any infestations at that hotel. If not, the site will show you the location of the nearest reported infestation.

Obviously, if the hotel has had bed bug problems, choose a different place to stay.

Bed Bugs Love To Travel Too

When travel day arrives, pack up each outfit inside an airtight bag. Ziploc makes large airtight bags that are perfect for this purpose. Bed bugs love to travel on clothing, but they can’t get inside those bags. Yes, even in the belly of an airplane, they can hitch a ride in your checked baggage, on occasion, to your final destination. They can be slick.

Hotel Inspection

When you arrive at your room you want to check for bedbugs on vacation, examine the sheets for the small dark stains (bed bug poo) that are sure signs of an infestation. Check underneath the corners of the mattress and box spring to look for bugs or their eggs (the eggs are little white spots the size of grains of salt.)

Don’t Ask For Another Room – Get A Refund

If you see signs of bed bugs, don’t just ask to be moved to a different room, because chances are the entire hotel is infested. Ask for your money back and find another place to stay.

Less Informed Verses The Experienced Hotel Managers

Occasionally, less-informed hotel managers may blame the traveler for bringing the bed bugs or be stand-offish about a refund.

But more-experienced hotel managers are aware of the bed bug issue and are usually willing to accommodate refund requests, especially if you make it known that you’d be willing to go on the internet and spread the word about their infestation.

Be Safe Not Sorry! Finally, when heading back home, do a quick visual check of your bags and again look for bugs, eggs, or stains that might indicate they are present. A few extra minutes spent taking these preventative measures will go along way toward making sure you never experience a bed bug outbreak in your home

RV Travel in Oregon

RV Travel in Oregon
RV Travel in Oregon

It is usually a good thing to begin an RV trip into Oregon at Portland, Oregon’s largest city. From here, it is easy to connect to highways that reach east, central, southern and coastal Oregon. If you are planning to stay at any National or State Parks or Monuments, you will have to make reservations in advance, sometimes a year in advance.

RV’s are not easy to drive into Portland itself. The highways have lots of curves and multiple bridges, some of which don’t allow RV’s on them. A good place to stay in this are is the Jantzen Beach RV Park. From this park it is an easy drive to the MAX train station which you can take into Portland.

RVing on the Oregon Coast

From Portland which is a the northern part of the state, you can easily drive down by the coast until you reach Eureka in California. The northern area around Astoria does not have any RV parks with ocean views. If your rig is not too tall you can stay in the Cannon Beach RV park which is a short walk to the beach. Cities as you go down the coast that have RV parks by the beach include Lincoln City, Newport and Waldport.

Six miles south of Yachats is a great RV park, but this will run you about $60 a night. If you can afford it, this RV park is worth a stay. Going on down the coast, there are RV parks by the beach in Winchester Bay, Coos Bay, Gold Beach and Brookings. As you enter California, there is a beach front part in Cresent City for you to begin your stay in a new state. From Crescent City, you can easily take in Redwood State Park. These redwoods are not to be missed. The RV sites listed here are all a short drive from Highway 101.

From Crescent City you can easily head off to Crater Lake National Park, Oregon’s only National Park. This park is definitely worth a trip. You can also stay at an RV in Bend, which is not that far away from the park. Staying two days in Bend will allow you to see the sites of the Bend area and the National Park as well. From there, you can continue north and cross the Columbia River gorge area which is breathtaking. It is a short drive from here to visit Mount St. Helen. This is in Washington, but this area has much more to do for a family than Mount Rainier, which offers only hiking.

From here, it is easy to return to Portland. You can end your trip here, or visit other places in Oregon. It is a short trip into the Willamette Valley, Oregon’s agricultural area. This area is simply beautiful to drive through with its wooden bridges and green valleys. The area has many vineyards and wineries as well. This trip can be done in a day.

RVing in the Interior of Oregon

Some other places to fit into your agenda are the Mount Hood area which has spectacular views, skiing in season, and spectacular waterfalls. The high desert area of Oregon features numerous golf courses and rivers to fish. If you want to see the painted desert in Eastern Oregon, there are several places you should plan to visit. One is the Baker City area where you can still see the wagon ruts left by the pioneers. The Oregon Trail Interpretive Center should not be missed. In Kimberly, you can visit the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. This is a large park with several areas and mueseums to visit. These areas offer RV campsites along the route.

If you plan to head home from Portland, along Highway 5 to California, you can also plan to visit Salem, the state capital and Ashland where Oregon’s Shakespeare Festival runs all spring and summer. There is simply so much to see in Oregon, it is hard to decide how to see it all.
