Saving money on family vacations

May 31, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

When going on a family vacation it is important for most families, especially mine, to save as much money as possible. This is a list of ways and ideas that you can do to save money on vacation. Some of the best ways to save money is by setting priorities before the year even starts, like booking in the off season for your destination and leaving mid week if you are taking a flight.

I also really like the idea of getting a kitchenette.

Almost half of all Americans surveyed in a recent study by AIG Travel Guard said they intend to change vacation plans to save money. That means taking shorter vacations, choosing modestly priced hotels and restaurants, and looking for cheaper ways to get to a destination.

Although summer airfare deals seem to have taken a vacation, finding bargains is still possible, travel experts say.

Successful travelers will be those who keep their summer plans flexible, said Anne Banas, editor at SmarterTravel.com.

“If you’re the type where you know what you want – a special place at a specific time – then start benchmarking prices for a couple weeks now and book soon,” Banas said. “If you’re flexible about where and when you go, wait. People are waiting to book (airfare, lodging, travel packages) and the (travel) companies are going to put things on sale in late April or May.”

Here are 10 tips Saving money on family vacations

with a penguin1. Think off-season. Summertime deals abound in Florida, Mexico and even Puerto Rico and Aruba. It’s hot, sure, but Valley residents are used to that, right? Heather Martin of Scottsdale usually goes to San Diego in the summer. This year, it’s Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, for a few days at lower prices, which she considers a good compromise. “It’s safer than most people think and fun,” she said of the vacation destination also known as Rocky Point. “Play on the beach. The resorts down there have spas and are amazing.” If you can’t take the heat, consider Lake Tahoe, Calif.; Aspen or Telluride, Colo.; or Portland, Maine, popular winter destinations, says Suzanne Rowan Kelleher, editor of travel Web site WeJustGotBack.com. Summer lodging is up to $200 cheaper than in winter, and these cold-weather havens turn into summer hot spots for biking, hiking and fishing.

  • The problem with this may be that these areas are too hot for you in the middle of summer, go to weather.com and see what it was like last year at the time you are thinking of going.

2. Think any day but Saturday
. Kelleher said playing around with dates, such as leaving midweek and returning on a Monday or Tuesday, can save a family hundreds of dollars in airfare and room rates.

  • I have save many times travelling mid week, great idea.

3. Get a kitchen. When budgeting a family vacation, the price of dining often is overlooked. A home rental with a full kitchen – or such hotels as Embassy Suites or Residence Inn with in-room microwaves and refrigerators – can stem food costs, a significant part of any trip. Fixing one meal a day at “home” can save hundreds in a week, Kelleher said. Tip: Pack condiments or collect fast-food packets, because buying ketchup, mustard or Worcestershire sauce can add up.

  • A kitchenette in Hawaii saved us money and was a great way to eat better. Especially good because kids don’t seem to always be hungry at mealtimes

4. Swap homes. The film The Holiday, starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, popularized the idea, and it’s gaining steam as a summer-vacation option, said Eileen Ogintz, a syndicated travel columnist who runs Taking theKids.com. Details of the home exchange are worked out between the two parties. Online home-swap sites may charge about $100 per year. Check homeexchange.com and homelink.org.

  • Not to sure about swapping homes with kids involved, there is that couchsurfing site as well along the same vein.

5. Rent a home. If swapping homes sounds too out there, consider renting one. Travelers may be wary of cost or the rental process, but Ogintz says home rentals often are cheaper than hotels and may offer hot tubs, pools and access to transportation. Many of the Web sites offer slide shows and Google Earth maps of the property. Try homeaway.com, vrbo.com and zonder.com.

6. Volunteer. Spend a day working on trails or other charitable projects and get discounts on hotels and other travel perks, Ogintz said. This emerging form of travel, dubbed voluntourism, gives travelers a purpose and an itinerary (including options for families). Many times, airfare, meals and vaccinations are tax-deductible. Visit vol unteermatch.com, I-to-I.com and sierraclub.org/outings.

  • Again I am not sure if kids really have the patience to volunteer but this is a great way to get to know a new area and meet the locals if it is done out of the country.

7. Make an informed bid. You’ve heard you can bid on air, hotel and car components at priceline.com and hotwire .com, but don’t forget skyauction.com and luxury link.com, said Nancy Schretter, managing editor of the Family Travel Network (familytravelnetwork.com). At skyauction.com and luxury link.com, people also can bid on Broadway tickets, spa packages and dining certificates. These sites are buyer-beware, however, because once you click, the purchase is final. Schretter recommends visiting bidding fortravel.com and betterbid ding.com to better understand the parameters of auction sites.

8. Assemble a crew
. During the past few years, “togethering” on vacations with friends and family members has been among the biggest travel trends. It also allows families to stretch their budgets by splitting the costs of lodging (vacation home, villa or houseboat), Schretter said. When deciding upon your destination, Schretter said, don’t forget “kids-eat-free, stay-free and play-free” deals commonly offered at such chains as Marriott, Holiday Inn, Wyndham, Palace Resorts, FDR Resorts and Barcelo Resorts. Some cruise lines offer similar packages.

  • Travelling with friends and neighbors with kids not only helps to have a good vacation but the parents can also trade looking after kids and let parents go trekking on their own for the day.

9. Research fuel costs
. Gas prices are high, but how much will those prices eat into your vacation budget? Anne Banas of SmarterTra vel.com recommends using AAA’s fuelcostcalculator.com to estimate your gas expenditure. Select your starting point, destination city and vehicle make, model and year. GasBuddy.com allows you to find the cheapest gas by ZIP code. “This can be really effective. You just have to make sure you’re going to the right gas station and not the one across the street. It works well with a GPS system,” Banas said.

  • Tough year this year for car trips although this can be a very great family trip of course. I spent my childhood travelling on road trips and every summer my wife cringes whenever I use the term Road Trip.

10. Book now
. Or later. Both can be the right way to save money, depending on the type of traveler you are. If you know what you want and when you want it and find a price you can live with, book it now, Banas said, while inventory in your price range is available. If you’re flexible about where and when, watch for sales in May and beyond.

Travel Photo Tips

May 19, 2014 by admin 1 Comment

Travel Photos are some of the hottest selling pieces of tourist souvenirs. It appeals equally to experienced travelers and first-timers. These can be both a source of sweet memories and also a profitable venture to be involved in.

However, not all travel photographers are equally successful. While some know how to do it right and cash it big, others only seem to get more frustration out of it. If you are planning on being like the former, here are a few tips for you that could greatly change the way you approach and handle this.

How To Be a Travelling Photographer

Choosing the Right Place: Not all places are created equal. This is a fact every tourist will confirm. As a result, when choosing the right place to shoot your travel photos, you should make sure that it is a “saleable” place. In other words, choose a location with some very popular and easily recognizable tourist attractions. Don’t worry if your pictures are blurry or not exactly how you wanted them, you can easily get help with photo restoration so your photos end up looking amazing.

Billy ButterflyWhere do the Statue of Liberty and Times Square remind you of? How about the folding bridge? Yes, these are the kinds of places that you want to spend your time photographing. Your most scenic pictures of some obscure place probably won’t fetch you much, if anything at all (unless you already have an established reputation in this field.)

Choosing the Right Time: Selecting the time to shoot is just as important as where you are shooting. Some places like beaches would definitely require, of necessity, that you select a clear weather, because nobody wants a picture of a Caribbean beach during winter. Other places may require totally different seasons, but you get the idea.

Doing your Research: Before you set out to a place to shoot travel photos, you should do some preliminary research about the appeal of the place. You can visit the sites of popular tourist companies, photo companies and local tourist websites. If they have certain places continuously featured in their picture galleries, that is a good indication that it is a hot travel spot and has a lot of potential for salable pictures.

Planning a Shooting Schedule: Normally the icons that you are photographing will either be inside or outside, with most being outside. If it is inside, you should plan on taking your pictures during the day when you will have some sunlight streaming in through the windows and other openings. However, if the are outside, it will be best to shoot your pictures either at dusk or at dawn. These two have been proven to be the best times to get very scenic and picturesque travel photos of your icons. You could then plan your shooting schedule accordingly.

Save some Money: If you are planning on visiting more than one place in a region, it may be a good idea to see if the travel companies have some deals (they usually do) for multi-destination travelers. These packages will enable you to get low airfares while at the same time being able to visit the places that interest you the most.
Travel photos can be a lucrative business if you know how to approach it right. However, following the above tips may just be the edge that you need to boost your productivity and fun.

How a Great Travel Agency Will Help Your Vacation

April 11, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

Antoinette gives us some great tips here on how to get the great break that you are looking for when you go one vacation. I loved them and wanted to share them with you.

For many people, vacations are few and far between. It is difficult to have to work all week and only get a day or two to recover. Everyone needs a break now and then from the normal life. If it has been a while since you had a vacation someplace that you wanted to go, then perhaps it is time. You can start by just thinking about what you want. From there, you can find a travel agency.

Start With a Good Travel Agency

AntoinetteChoosing a travel agency should take some consideration. There are a variety of agencies out there. Some will probably be more well-known than others. It is important to look at the reputation of the agency before going forward with vacation planning. Look at reviews as well as the opinions of those you know before settling on an agency.

You should also consider the customer service of a travel agency before you start searching for vacations through a specific one. Customer service is very important when choosing a business, but when it comes to a travel agency it is especially important that you know an agency is going to treat you right, find good deals for you, and give you the vacation you have been wanting.

Great Reputation is a Must

The customer service and reputation of a company are the two areas that you should especially consider. You might want to also take into consideration how much an agency will charge you for their services. If you have special needs or have a family member with special needs, then you will need to make sure that the agency you choose will help you with these logistics. It may take finding a company that specializes in this area and can make arrangements to suit you or your family’s needs.

There may be other areas that you should consider before hiring a travel agency, but it may depend on your specific needs. Considering all of these areas will help you as you decide on various vacations. You will never want to hire a company that will send you someplace that is dirty, too expensive for the quality, or have some other issue without your knowledge.

Take the time to call a few different travel agencies as you look at vacations since they have contacts with services like Scottsdale Vacation Rental Management – VacayAZ.com where they know about the best places to stay in your vacation. You may want to arrange to meet at the agencies once you narrow down your decision. You might find that choosing a more well-known chain agency is the safest option for you. Sometimes a well-known company can be franchised and still not offer the quality, but you might still feel safer with this option because the company should be standardized to some degree.

How to Keep Children Entertained When Travelling

December 28, 2012 by admin Leave a Comment

Travelling with young children can be a challenge, especially on long trips in a car, airplane, or train – it’s really hard for them to sit in one confined position for a long period of time. The trick to making travelling fun and exciting for children is to keep them entertained and their tummies full.

With boredom, comes restlessness, and with hunger comes crankiness. A combination of this can mean an unpleasant trip, not only for the children, but for everyone travelling together. If you take some time to prepare before embarking upon a long travelling venture, you might have a much happier experience.

Tips for Keeping Kids Entertained When Travelling

Taylor and JaidenPack Travel Bags – Pack a travel bag specific to each of your children. Some important items to remember are your child’s favorite stuffed animal, blanket, and toys. Nothing comforts a child more than his or her favorite blanket and stuffed animal. Just these items alone can make a big difference when travelling.

Also include snacks and water in spill proof containers for those in-between moments when your child may be suddenly hungry or thirsty. This may help in keeping your child satisfied until the next available meal time.

Bring Along Activity Books – Purchase some portable trays, so each child has his or her own personal activity center. Children can use these trays as tables when travelling. Bring along new colouring books and other fun writing activity books that your child can draw, write, and color in. Remember to also bring the colors, pens, and pencils along.

The importance here is that these activity books are new. The reason for this is that your child will be more excited and entertained with something new, than drawing books that have already been marked up.

Purchase Toys and Games Designed for Travelling – To avoid the crying or nagging of dropped toys or other items, purchase games and activity centers that are designed specifically for travelling  These items will usually have pens attached by a string to an activity book, and have magnetic pieces for games or puzzles.

By keeping everything within your child’s reach, and taking precautions for the unexpected, your child may have so much fun that he or she will not even realize how long you’ve been travelling. Having a variety of different engaging toys and games are even great for children to enjoy together.

Pick up a few Disposable Cameras – Investing in a few disposable cameras can create hours of fun for children, without the worry of it breaking or becoming damaged by an accidental drink spill, especially if you purchase the waterproof type. Give each child a camera and ask him or her to take pictures of items that he or she has never seen before. This makes it fun and can keep children occupied for hours if travelling by ground.

Once you arrive at your final destination, have your child’s pictures developed so he or she can immediately see what kind of pictures were taken. Younger children, especially, really enjoy taking pictures, so stocking up on a few disposable cameras can be a worthwhile investment.

Bring Along Electronic Items – Both older and younger children enjoy electronic items, such as DVD players, music players, and handheld gaming systems. Depending on the age of your child, a movie, for example, can easily deliver two hours of non-stop entertainment. If deciding to pack along electronics, always remember to pack extra car chargers or batteries.

Keeping children entertained when travelling is easy with some pre-planning. Children love to be busy seeing things and doing things, so making frequent stops if travelling by car can also be a great way to break up a long trip. Be creative and think from your child’s perspective. After all, no one knows what your child loves more than you.
