Sampling the Beer of Aruba

March 13, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

After spending a few days in Aruba, you might notice a unique brand of beer served at every bar and restaurant on the island. Balashi, Aruba’s favorite local brew, is one of the most popular products produced in Aruba. Starting small just ten years ago, the Balashi Brewery has grown into one of the world’s most acclaimed beers. Meanwhile, the Balashi Brewery has constructed a truly state of the art facility complete with a European-style beer garden that has quickly become a favorite destination for traveling families and locals alike.

As the island of Aruba retains much of its Dutch colonial charm, it makes sense that Balashi has always been produced using the finest European brewing traditions. Klaus Eckert, the renowed German brewmaster, experimented with brews during Balashi’s early days, eventually developing the brewery’s signature beer. The resultant variety of pilsner exhibits a deep golden hue, minimal bitterness and the distinct aroma of fresh hops. The world-class taste of Balashi is created using hand-selected Scottish malt and German hops, allowing the beer to compete with Europe’s finest brews year in and year out.

While many beers have gained the favor of judges and beer lovers throughout the world, few have earned as much respect as Balashi in so short a time. While the mother company of the Balashi Brewery – Brouwerij Nacional Balashi – was founded over ten years ago, the first batch of Balashi was not brewed until May 1999. It took only two years for the awards to start rolling in from prestigious brewing competitions, beginning with the 2001 Gold Medal in the Monde Selection at Brussels. Courtesy of a $12 million state-of-the-art brewing facility, the consistent quality of Balashi earned the Grand Gold medal in 2004.

If you visit the facility, you will have the opportunity to participate in the free daily tour. Visitors are guided along a catwalk above the brewery floor while the guide outlines the complex beer making process – from the earliest stages of the fermentation to the bottling and packaging. As Balashi has become a source of local pride, the tours are always energetic and provide an atmosphere that the whole family can enjoy. The free one hour tour takes place each weekday at 10 am.

After touring the Balashi facility, you should definitely take some time to relax in the brewery’s famous beer garden. Modeled after the inviting courtyards of Holland – Aruba’s mother country – Balashi’s beer garden has quickly become a favorite destination of locals and tourists alike. Besides having a chance to taste Aruba’s award winning brew in its freshest state, you can enjoy an incredible view of the island’s unspoiled countryside from every seat in the beer garden. Children can sample the brewery’s special non-alcoholic brew, a healthy drink known as Malta. Brewed in the same fashion as Balashi’s beer, Malta is not fermented and the final product is a slightly sweet, dark colored beverage unique to Aruba.

Oddly enough, just a few years ago, ordering a “Balashi Cocktail” at a restaurant or bar in Aruba would have provided you a glass of fresh drinking water. Named for the island’s desalination plant located in the region known as Balashi, the water has since become an integral part of Aruba’s brewing success. As the name Balashi comes from a pair of Aruac native words meaning “near the sea,” it seems an appropriate title for one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated beers. Additionally, as the brewery is located amongst the remnants of a once-vibrant gold mining industry in the Balashi region, the distinctive glow of Aruba’s beer seems all the more connected to the island’s history and unique landscape.

As sampling local products is often one of the great joys of traveling, make sure you visit the brewery that has quickly become a source of national pride for all Arubans.

Tourist Information on Calpe, Spain

March 13, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

Calpe is one of the more popular resorts on the northern Costa Blanca. The city is located north of Altea and south of Denia. It is an ideal spot for a vacation along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

The city started out as a fishing village. In addition to tourism, fishing remains a major industry in the town. As a result, fresh seafood that arrives in the port is regularly served on menus in restaurants throughout the city. The name Calpe means steep, rugged hill made of rock.

Most visitors travel into the area through the Alicante airport, which is located about 60 kilometres from the city. The Valencia airport is located about 105 kilometres from Calpe. Buses are available from both these airports to the city. If you prefer to have a vehicle, car hire companies operate at both airports for convenient car rentals.

Attractions in Calpe

One of the main attractions in the town is the rock formation that gives the city its name. The Penon de Ifach is a large, craggy rock formation. This is also the smallest natural park in the country. It is protected due to the many varieties of vegetation and indigenous birds that are located near the rock. This formation is very popular among rock climbers. There is a spectacular view of the Costa Blanca from the top of the formation.

The Old Town area is at the center of the city. This area is home to an Arts and Crafts fair every day in the summer months, except Mondays. There are a variety of local merchants and crafts people offering goods for sale here.

The original town walls are located near the original Moorish quarter in the old town area. These walls were used to defend the village against invasions from pirates many years ago. Also in this area are the remains of an ancient Roman villa. This is historical evidence of the Roman heritage of the city.

The city has a vibrant night life, particularly in the months of June through September. You will find a variety of live entertainment to enjoy. In addition, there are art exhibitions and a variety of workshops to attend.

If you rent a car for your vacation, you can enjoy many nearby attractions during your stay. The Jalon Valley is located about fifteen kilometres from the city. This is also known as the valley of wine. The Jalon valley is famous for a variety of wines. A market in the area sells wine by the liter, as well as food and clothing from local merchants.

Also close to Calpe is the city of Benidorm. This large city is a major tourist attraction. Benidorm is home to a few theme parks, a vibrant night life and many other attractions. Renting a car is the best way to explore Benidorm and the surrounding areas during your stay on the Costa Blanca.

Where to Stay in Calpe

There are a variety of options for accommodations during your holiday in this city. Resort hotels are located right near the beach areas. These hotels offer luxury and a variety of amenities. Rooms tend to book quickly in the summer. If you plan to stay in a resort hotel, book your reservation well in advance of your trip.

There are several less expensive options in the city. Economical hostels are available and offer a nice place to stay. However, you can expect less luxury and fewer amenities than you will find at the larger hotels.

Many people come to the area to climb the rock formation that gives the city its name. Climbers often choose to stay at one of the camping areas that are located near the formation. These are very popular with climbers and other people wanting to enjoy an outdoor experience in nature.

If you prefer more privacy, consider renting a property for your vacation. There are many apartments and condos available for rent. Many are located near the beach areas. If you are staying for a longer period of time, this can be less expensive than the larger hotels. In addition, a rental offers a more private place to stay and relax.

China – A Synopsis Of Years

March 13, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

The Chinese people were still, for the most part, wearing the infamous blue and green “Mao Suits”; as they are known to the outside world. Of course, every once in a while there was a young girl in her teens experimenting with pastels and designs, usually not succeeding at combining a flower design with a stripe design. The ensemble was then finished off with knee-high nylons exposing bare knees below the skirt hem; nylons, of course, most often with a run. Usually, I would think to myself that they should just stay with what they know and feel most comfortable with; blues and greens. Fashion magazines from the West have been in China for many years now and I remember the first time I saw one on the newsstand I thought they will never make it. However, I was wrong; they are doing well and have many Chinese followers. Today, the average Chinese teens are learning to express themselves much as their peers in Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Los Angeles, and sometimes even more aggressively. Bleached blond hair, tattoos, and body piercing are becoming more and more common.

One personal frustration I would often run into was having people tell me that I dressed like a girl. This of course bothered me as I didn’t care to have people see me as being so flamboyant. However, in all fairness I was not flamboyant at all I would just wear a little more color than what they had ever seen on a man and they found it odd and had no other way to express the phenomena they were beholding.

If we stop to consider for a moment where China has come since the first visit of President Nixon in 1976, I think that we will realize what great leaps and bounds they have taken and how difficult it has been for those affected by the changes.

One of the big mistakes anyone who has not spent a considerable amount of time overseas, in a country so vastly different than their own, will be to misunderstand certain aspects of culture differences and the impact that culture plays on inter-cultural relations.

Upon my first return to America, I was made more aware of the way people observed differences and viewed culture. There seems to be a new awareness showing its face in America called “Diversity”, which is a way of embracing difference and guiding change. Diversity is very much a realization of culture and this realization goes to show that culture is indeed something that needs to be recognized and understood.

The way one culture deals within its self is not something easy for an outsider to grasp. I remember hearing a story of a Japanese woman somewhere on the West Coast several years ago who had attempted unsuccessfully to drown her children and herself for something her husband had done which caused severe “loss of face”. In the eyes of American society she was viewed as having attempted manslaughter, however the Japanese community spoke up and requested that she be allowed to return to Japan where the situation could be dealt with within her own culture; as America was unable to understand the cultural implications of the situation.

If we stop to look at some of the things going on in China today from a positive point we can give them much credit, which is well deserved. Mao is a Chinese National hero who is still respected today by the average Chinese. He brought food and electricity to China. He took a China plagued with starvation and made it into country able to feed the masses.

In an average Chinese city ten years ago, many people didn’t have a refrigerator or a television but if they did they were considered to be wealthy. Over the past five years, televisions and refrigerators have become more common place. They have a choice of numerous cable television stations from within China and can even get foreign stations with the right equipment. CCTV (China Central Television) alone has around ten stations, which are aired within Asia and some internationally. Today, wide-screen televisions, refrigerators, radios, stereos, DVD and CD players and computer goods line the store isles.

When I first arrived in China there was only one bookstore, Xin Hua Shu Dian, this is the national bookstore, which has at least one outlet in all cities and towns. If you wanted to find a book you would not have much to choose from, the prices would run about one yuan to three yuan (approximately 12-36 US cents). If you could find anything of interest it would be a surprise. Today, however, privately owned bookstores are more common. A few years back, a new bookstore opened up in Beijing; it was three stories and you could find books on any subject including hundreds of books on many subjects which have been translated from English and other languages. Books today start at a price of around 12 yuan for a cheap one, the average is 20 (approximately $3.00).

Twenty years ago, the Chinese were leery to interact with foreigners for fear of getting themselves into political trouble. Over the years, however, the Chinese people have become more open towards foreigners and even today it would be considered by many to be a “pat” on the face to have a foreigner visit their home.
