Making Memories on Family Vacation

July 14, 2009 by admin 1 Comment

Here is a great article on family memories from family holidays from Lori Linna of the Green Bay Press-Gazette‘s Community Conversation Advisory Panel.

Memories of my childhood family vacations consisted of trips to see relatives or camping — all within Wisconsin.

As an adult with kids of my own, I relish traveling outside the state and exposing not only my kids but myself to the wonders our country has to offer. Last summer I had a VISIONS conference in Washington, D.C. Since we had never been there we took our entire family to visit our nation’s capital for a vacation.

After my seminar I was eager to join the rest of the family on their sight-seeing adventures. Seeing the presidential monuments and war memorials left an impression on all of us as well as viewing the Declaration of Independence and the Emancipation Proclamation at the National Archives. By accident, we stumbled upon an art museum with a beautiful garden inside the building. We stared in awe at the planes, rockets and space capsule at the Air and Space Museum, and received secret identities at the spy museum. [Read more…] about Making Memories on Family Vacation

Camping for Vacation this year?

July 11, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

Charity Bonner of the Beacon News wrote this great article about the great American vacation – Camping!

Families who ordinarily travel across the country or overseas seeking a piece of the new or exotic are finding it right here in the Fox Valley. The economy is affecting the traditional family vacation, and more people are finding fun in the quintessential summer activity: camping.

Sue Rogers, one of the campground’s owners, said she has noticed an increase in campers looking to de-stress.

“With all the job changes, we are finding that more people can’t wait to get out in the country and hear the birds sing and frogs croak — find berries to eat, trails to hike and outdoors to explore,” she said. [Read more…] about Camping for Vacation this year?

Getting kids to sleep on vacation

July 10, 2009 by admin 1 Comment

With the summer season upon us, many families will be flocking to the highways to embark on amusement ride-filled vacations, to camp at majestic national parks or to visit Grandma and Grandpa. But with all of the excitement and fun away from home come missed naps and overstimulated kids who don’t want to sleep at night, not even with their amazon fur pillow which is so amazing.

Dr. Chris Drake, a bioscientific investigator at the Henry Ford Sleep Research Center in Detroit and resident sleep expert for AmericInn Hotels’ “Sleep Better America” program, knows firsthand the benefits of connecting while on family vacation, yet he also knows how lost hours of sleep can be unhealthy for kids and cause big headaches for parents. To ease parents’ minds, Drake offers the following tips to help children achieve the best sleep possible while on the road:

– Plan activities around your children’s nap schedules while on vacation.

– Stick to healthy meals and regular mealtimes.

– Start your usual bedtime routines of putting on pajamas, brushing teeth and reading books one hour earlier.

Cures For Mosquito Bites

June 7, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

The best cures for mosquito bites, of course, are those that stop the little critters biting in the first place. But if it is too late for that, there are still a few things that you can try.

A mosquito bite is not like the sting of a wasp or bee which is an injection of poison. Mosquitoes just want a little taste of your blood. But to stop it coagulating so that they can easily drink it, they also deposit a protein which causes an allergic reaction in some people.

It seems that some people get bitten constantly and others never have a single itch, but this is probably nothing to do with whether the insects like you. The truth is that some people do not get allergic and so they do not know they have been bitten.

If you ask a hundred bite-scratching people what they recommend, you may get a hundred different answers. Here are some of the most popular ideas. [Read more…] about Cures For Mosquito Bites
