Will RV sales pick up this year?

April 10, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

rvSnow flurries fall on those wishing for warmer camping weather.  Others step inside an RV to see how it handles the cold temperatures.  No matter how you like your camping weather, we’re told the deals for RVs in Colorado are hot.

“Everybody’s looking for deals right now, and there are deals to be found,” says The Car Show General Manager Jerry VanBrunt.

“Just trying to find the right thing at the right time,” says Doug Miller, who came to the RV show to look at buying a toy trailer, but ended up touring several recreational vehicles. [Read more…] about Will RV sales pick up this year?

Dark clouds in Vacation Market

March 4, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

More struggles lie ahead for the tattered U.S. travel industry as hotels, casinos, airlines and travel agencies fight the tide of economic recession and flagging travel demand.

It’s a tough battle for the companies. Job losses, obliterated savings and falling home prices have made potential leisure travelers reconsider vacations. Business travel has taken a hit, too, as companies trim costs or shut down.

Executives from travel companies like Las Vegas Sands Corp, Marriott International Inc and UAL Corp’s United Airlines will speak this week on challenges facing their businesses at the Reuters Travel and Leisure Summit in New York. [Read more…] about Dark clouds in Vacation Market

Little Known Spanish Beaches & Coves

January 8, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

When the crowds head for Spain for their vacation, they tend to opt for all the well known places. But these well known beaches are also full of people; especially when children are out of school during vacation time. The way to avoid the crowds is to find out about the little known Spanish Beaches and Coves. These are places where you can feel like you are on a desert island and you don’t want to share your discoveries with other people.

If you go to the South of the country you will find 90 km of coastline. Since it is on the Atlantic Ocean rather than the Mediterranean Sea, it will be slightly cooler. In summer, that means it will still be hot and it will be an ideal place to get away from it all. Here you will find Costa De La Luz where the coastline is unspoiled and it is not a destination that many people have discovered. Spaniards come here and, in July and August, you will find the people celebrating the fiestas. Apart from that, very few people seem to visit here.

There is a wonderful little village which is on a hidden beach called Bolonia. It is a fine white sand beach and the population of this little village is only 125 people. There are a few restaurants in this village, but it is perfect for your vacation hideaway. You are able to walk along the coastline and you will arrive at different beaches along this coastline which are less known to tourists.

You might decide you want to visit an area which is well-known, like Costa Brava. Northeast and southwest of Tossa are many rocky coves some of which have very quiet beaches. If you go north from Llafranc you will find Tamariu which has a small cove. It is said that the water here is some of the most translucent on the Mediterranean coastline. If you head to Begur, you will find a series of small beaches. If you go from there to Fornells, you will find a hamlet on a beautiful beach in the Costa Brava, which includes a marina, beach and clear blue water.

As you search your favorite destination in Spain you will find lots of hidden places to explore. You will find lots of little known Spanish beaches and coves for you to get away from the tourists and be alone with your friends and family. There are many beautiful beaches and coves waiting to be discovered. Take some time to get away from the crowds and see what is waiting for you in some of the different destinations.

WestJet cancels fuel surcharge

September 18, 2008 by admin Leave a Comment

WestJet today honoured its commitment to monitor the fuel environment and remove the fuel surcharge if and when the price of fuel subsided. The airline announced the removal of the fuel surcharge, effective 1 p.m. MT today, in acknowledgement of the recent decline in fuel prices.

“The decision to eliminate the fuel surcharge is in line with who we are,” commented WestJet Executive Vice-President of Guest Experience and Marketing Bob Cummings. “The WestJet brand is all about caring, straight talk, trust and best value – our advertising is effective because we walk the talk.”

The elimination of the fuel surcharge supports WestJet’s commitment to providing the best value to its guests, which is the premise for the airline’s new advertising campaign. This latest addition to the successful and award-winning owners campaign extends WestJet’s caring reputation, demonstrating the airline’s commitment to offering guests the best value in air travel.

“We are proud of the transparent approach we have to our pricing and the superior value we provide to the travelling public,” continued Bob Cummings. “Our latest owners campaign highlights those key differences between us and the competition. The campaign is done in a light-hearted, fun way. [Read more…] about WestJet cancels fuel surcharge

The Golden Age of Amercian Family Vacations

June 6, 2008 by admin 1 Comment

coverSusan Sessions Rugh has written a great book about the history of the family camping or at least car driving adventure. The book is called The Golden Age of American Family Vacations and in it she captures some of what I grew up with in the 70’s the travelling of the family to the campground and prts unknown, the excitement of family vacations.

Americans have been making fun of family vacations from the time they came into style after World War II. The emergent medium of television captured some of the travails of the traveling family in late-night variety shows. Morey Amsterdam opened his show one evening in 1949 with a monologue reporting that he was just back from a vacation to Florida with his family: “I steered, my mother-in-law drove.” He commented on the expense of the vacation: “It cost us $400—a day.” It was “ten dollars for an aspirin.” He suffered the usual fate of the New York tourist in Florida when he admitted he went out on the beach and “walked away one big beautiful blister.” Morey Amsterdam’s jokes made television viewers feel better about spending the money and putting up with their families on vacation because they could laugh at themselves. Perhaps at least they recognized they weren’t alone in their stupidity!

In their comedy show on NBC television in 1952, Bob and Ray satirized the summer vacation by offering for sale a summer vacation kit “for people who want to be uncomfortable without leaving home.” It included a dozen items, among them “a bathing suit that makes you look kind of silly” and “a hard table so you feel like you have slept in a camp cot.” It came complete with a beach umbrella, along with a “handsome lifeguard to divert your wife’s attention while you are setting up the umbrella.” Finally, the sound effects man added the sounds of a day in the country: bullfrogs, owls hooting, crickets chirping, waves pounding on the beach, moose calling, the horn of a passing train sounding. Summer vacations were a lot of trouble and not really much of a vacation, but the men were caught up in this travel ritual for the sake of the family.
