What is Xcaret?

March 18, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Xcaret is a Maya civilization archaeological site located on the Caribbean coastline of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the modern-day state of Quintana Roo in Mexico. The site was occupied by the pre-Columbian Maya and functioned as a port for navigation and an important Maya trading center.

Some of the site’s original structures are contained within a modern-day tourism development, the privately owned Xcaret Eco Park.

xcaretXcaret is majestic archaeological park located in Riviera Maya, Cancun in the Mexican Caribbean Sea shore. Enjoy a show at night, with more than 300 actors on stage, resulting in a musical journey through the history of Mexico since pre-Hispanic times to the present day, with all the colorful costumes, folklore and dancing.

The recreation of a pre-Hispanic ball game, a charro celebration, a Mexican cemetery, a coral reef aquarium, a butterfly pavilion moreover underground rivers, beaches and natural pools, a place where you can swim with dolphins and have fun with countless attractions and activities that will make you live magical experiences. Come to Xcaret, one of the best Cancun attractions, and enjoy while discovering the natural and cultural wealth of Mexico.

How to Get to Xcaret

Car Rental

Rent a car at the Cancun airport, there are plenty of options, you can also get the services from Anytime Limousines company, which can be found right outside of the airport. Playa del Carmen is roughly 45 minutes from the airport. Tulum is another 45 minutes. After passing through Playa del Carmen, the main highway (Rte 307) turns from a modern 4-lane highway into a two lane highway. There are two regular lanes and an extra-wide shoulder to allow slower vehicles to pull over to let faster vehicles pass.

From the city of Tulum, the Boca Paiala road provides access to the beach-side hotels and areas further south, such as Punta Allen. This dirt road, if not freshly resurfaced, has massive potholes (commonly wider than a car). It is passable with a VW bug or a scooter, but the trip will be much tougher than if you drive a car or truck.

Tour Bus

There are tour buses that take people from the hotels in Cancun to Xcaret. These are pretty expensive but the busses look fantastic and the tour is likely a lot of fun. The tour includes entrance fee and lots of activites on the Xcaret grounds. The cost though is $116 per person (this works out to $90 for admission and $26 transportation per person).

City Bus

From the bus stations you can find first class bus service from bus station to bus station as well as limited bus service to the Cancun International Airport. ADO one of the largest national providers of first class and luxury bus transportation has routes from Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum to most major cities like Merida, Chetumal, Mahajual, amongst the most popular from the Riviera Maya. The cost for this is about 100 pesos which is about $20.

How Much Does a Visit to Xcaret Cost?

While Xcaret [Eco Park] offers many tourist packages, ranging from about $90 and over, a visitor can request to visit the archaeological ruins only for about four dollars according to an agreement with the Instituto Nacional de Antropología y Historia (INAH). However, park officials report that only about one person every three months requests that opportunity.

What is there to do at Xcaret?

There are lots of things to see and do in Xcaret. People like to do the snorkeling, swimming with dolphins ($149 per person), scuba diving and a few other things but these all cost money on top of your day pass. so what do you get to do for free? Lots!

Some of the real highlights of Xcaret seem to be:

  • The butterfly pavillion
  • Mayan Village
  • Equestrian show
  • Mayan ball game
  • ..and the Cemetery

Also make sure you go to the chapel after the cemetary. It’s the best view in the park (except for the observation needle). The kids really enjoy the aquarium area with the gigantic turtles.also the buffet food is a big hit with a lot of the people that go.

No matter how tired you are at the end of the day, STAY for the night show. It is awesome.

Tips for a Cheaper Holiday

March 18, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

If you are travelling abroad to a country that is relatively nearby such as France, there is a tendency to assume that flying will be the most expensive travel option. However, this is frequently not the case.

When you take into consideration the fuel associated with driving, or the cost of train tickets both in the UK and in France as well as the crossing itself, it often works out cheaper just to hop on a plane. The added bonus is that you can be in your destination in under an hour depending on the part of the country you are going to. When you plan your holiday, speak to someone who has experienced it for themselves like the folk at Freedom Destinations

family beachSo before you book the ferry or Eurostar, just check the prices of the flights. Whatever method you use, make sure that you book the cheapest way, looking out for hidden charges. It is usually best to book direct, but don’t rule out special offers through booking agents working out cheaper.

Choose your accommodation wisely

If you’re not lucky enough to win accommodation in one of our exciting auctions, there are a few other cheap options available to you. Of course, camping is revered for being a cheap way to get away on holiday.

These days, some campsites can be holiday resorts in themselves with pools, bars and restaurants on site. You also have the option of staying in a mobile home or caravan instead of a tent, the Melbourne Roma caravan dealers can provide you with the bets options. If camping isn’t your thing, self-catering accommodation can work out almost as cheaply and have the added bonus of being a real home from home.

The other option for a cheap holiday is to book at the very last minute, making the most of hotels that would prefer to sell the rooms at a heavily discounted rate rather than have empty rooms.

Self-catering or all-inclusive?

As mentioned above, self-catering is a great way to keep costs down whilst on holiday. One of the main expenses that you incur after booking travel and accommodation is the cost of food and drink.

If you have a well equipped kitchen in your holiday apartment, it is very easy to cook nutritious meals for everyone with minimal effort. It may seem counter-productive, but going all-inclusive can also reduce your costs. Whilst you pay a little more for the holiday as a whole, you don’t need to fork out anything extra for food and drink on arrival. This means that you could literally go on holiday with $100 in your wallet and still come home with some change.

The Holiday Bid Game offer customers the chance to win holidays and holiday related items in lowest unique bid online auctions. They also provide news and destination tips as well as information on how to win.

DisneyWorld Animal Kingdom Lodge

January 1, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Disneyland Animal Kingdom lodge is one of the high end resorts that Disney has onsite, or rather close to the sites of all the parks. Features of DisneyWold Animal Kingdom loge include concierge services, three restaurants, pool, stores, lounge areas, buses to all of the Disney Parks and best of all very close overlooks for all sorts of african animals within just a few feet.

Our Arrival at Disneyworld Animal Kingdom Lodge

Disneyworld Animal Kingdom LodgeDisney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge was a  bout a 30 minute drive from the Orlando airport and it was a logn day travelling from Calgary out to Orlando. When we arrived on site to the Animal Kingdom Lodge we were greeted by one of the ladies from the concierge service. We were very thankful to be going to Orlando as part of Childrens Wish (our 13 year old daughter has Kidney Disease inherited from us).

So after a long day of travelling we were quickly checked in and up into our Arusha View room overlooking the Savanna. Even though when we arrived fairly late in the evening we could see giraffes and other animals right off the deck and of course every morning and evening we would see more. I think though the kids were initially most excited that the room had bunk beds for them to fight over (What’s with kids and bunk beds?).

Views from the Animal Kingdom Lodge

There are views of the Savanna not only from the rooms (not all rooms of course) but there are also views from a few different viewing areas. There is a really big viewing area at the back of the resort and there is another great couple ones tucked away by the pool. There always seems to be some kind of wildlife around, we even saw little lizards around the pool and gulls actually landing in the pool (staff don’t seem to like that so much 🙂 )

The animals are always showing up or leaving based on their own daily schedules as the area around the resort is huge so at different times we saw giraffes, gazelles, zebras, flamingos, ostriches, and lots of strange birds. Absolutely amazing to say the least.

Access to the Disneyworld Parks

giraffe animal kingdom lodge1We had access to parking at the parks but often it was easier just to take a shuttle. The shuttles are free between the Disney Parks and there is a great system and schedule that seems to take you too and from Animal Kingdom Lodge to each of the parks. The only problem we found was trying to get back late at night after a park had closed. We found it best to take the shuttle for half a day to a park and then go back to the hotel to cool off in the pool, and then drive back to a park in the evening so that we would not have to fight crowds to leave. The Disney staff is fantastic but of course there is only so much they can do when thousands of people are trying to leave all at once and every kid is tired.

Restaurants at Animal Kingdom Lodge

We didn’t really eat at any of the restaurants at the resort as they were a bit pricey for us. The food is fantastic and fairly formal restaurants don’t seem to work very well with our crazy kids. There was one eating area that was great though, The Mara is a more casual, grab your own food kind of area where you just get your food and is more of a quick service/casual area without wait staff. I was able to get popcorn for the kids from there and juice which came in really handy for us.

The other restaurants are the Jiko, which is a formal finer dining type restaurant, and the Boma, which I now wish I would have gone to as it is a buffet style restaurant with authentic African foods to try to your hearts content.

Animal Kingdom Lodge Amentities

Disneyworld Animal Kingdom Lodge poolThe pool needs a place of its own. Wow, what an experience. The pool is huge and has a special little waterslide for the kids, three lifegaurds, some games for the kids and is open from morning to really late. My kids swam in the pool at some point everyday except one and loved it.

There is a full gym (which I never used) that was well stocked. Had all the weights and machines needed and was really clean. I find when I travel on business that a lot of hotel gyms are small, dirty and really an afterthought  but the gym here was big and had a lot of room between equipment which is super if you have anything left in your legs after all the walking at a Disney Park.

And finally the hotel stuff. We had Wifi in the room which is really important when you have kids and a very connected family, the concierge people were fantastic and seemed to have lots of info for what to do and where to go even when the questions are absolutely not Disney related (Where’s WalMart, target, and cheap fast food?) and always friendly with the kids.

Location to other stuff

Disneyworld Animal Kingdom Lodge1One of the problems with the whole Orlando area is that there are so many things to do and see and such a large distance. We started and finished at the airport of course but also went to Universal Studios and Seaworld along with all of the parks. The great thing about the area is that highways do connect everything up which is great.

If you are going to any of the Disney Resorts it is close to drive or shuttle but if you plan to go to Seaworld or Universal I really thing you need a car as it is a long drive (30 minutes or so). Having a rental car also helps if you want to get food or do any shopping around. Within about 10 minutes drive there are a bunch of stores, restaurants and other things to see.

Hope this is good info for you. Our family was absolutely blown away by the area, the hotel, the staff, and the amenities of the DisneyWorld Animal Kingdom Lodge and although it is a pricey place it really offered us everything we could possibly want.

WestJet and Disney

December 2, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

Starting today, the sky just became a little more magical. WestJet, in collaboration with Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Canada, has unveiled our first co-branded, custom-painted Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 featuring Mickey Mouse in one of his most famous roles – Sorcerer Mickey.

Can you believe how this plane looks. It is absolutely amazing looking and I can’t wait to see it up close.

westjet mickey

With its one-of-a-kind design, WestJet is ecstatic to be the first Canadian carrier to receive permission from Disney to use their iconic images on an aircraft. Known in the social media world as the #MagicPlane, will perform its inaugural flight tomorrow from Calgary to Orlando.

With both companies focused on creating memorable guest experiences, WestJet and Disney are natural partners. We have loved working with Disney throughout WestJet’s history and are thrilled to take our relationship to new heights. The aircraft will also feature Disney inflight entertainment, snacks and napkins. Although the Magic Plane will start with a flight down to Orlando, the aircraft will fly throughout WestJet’s domestic, transborder and international network. Keep your eyes open and let us know when the Magic Plane comes to visit your airport.
