Hanauma Bay – How to see it all

September 12, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

Hanauma Bay
Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay is one of the great natural places that has been turned into a tourist spot that I have ever been to. Traveling to Hanauma Bay takes a few minutes but is an all day adventure that everyone in the family will love. There is very shallow water that you can stand in, no waves and lots and lots of fish to see in the water with just a mask and snorkel. To me this is a giant aquarium that is very safe, easy to swim in and gives you memories that will last a lifetime.

Where is Hanauma Bay?

Hanauma Bay is about 30 minutes east of Waikiki and is a coral bay that is millions of years old but is perfectly suited for people to enjoy tropical fish in a wild setting and still be completely safe. You will be able to find all of the services that you need including food, soft drinks, masks and snorkels and even liefeguards if you get a little disoriented in the water.

There is a cost to go to Hanauma Bay and it is a bit of a commute from the hotels of Waikiki. On the main strip of hotels on Kuhio Avenue you have to find an eastbound bus 22 which runs every 20 minutes or so and this will take you to Hanauma Bay. The bus trip takes about 30 minutes or so.

One thing to realize before you take the time to go out to Hanauma Bay is that they are closed on Tuesdays and it is best to go earlier in the morning as it does get full later in the day and you will not be able to get down to the beach. There is a cost to enter the beach $5 per adult and children under 13 are free. Also there is a shuttle down to the beach from the info center for $1 and back up for $2. Food is essential to bring I think. We forgot to pack a lunch and spent $25 for hot dogs, chips, and drinks for the four of us.

Snorkeling is actually a very easy thing to do. In the salt water of Hanauma Bay you can get your mask on and have the snorkel sticking out of the water and you just float along (stay away from touching the coral) and just admire the fish. The water in most of the area is less than 6 feet deep and acutally my eight year old daughter was having trouble with the snorkeling part so she would just squat down and hold her breath underwater and saw litterally 100s of fish in almost no time.

There are plenty of fish of various sizes to see and they range from little 2 inch long fish to longer 12 or 15 inch long fish in other schools just swimming around. One of the things that some area of the world do is bring food to attract the fish, this is not allowed at Hanauma Bay but hte fish are very easy to see and are completly used to people so they will swim up to you and kiss your fingers if you hold them out.

5 Ways to make the most of your vacation

September 12, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

Washington: Edythe Harvey, MD, a psychiatrist with Menninger has offered five suggestions to alleviate stress during one’s vacation and enjoy the holiday time to the hilt.

“Going on vacation is a time to get away and relax, not stress out about. So start making plans now to leave work at work and focus on the most important people—your family,” Harvey said.

Try something different. Vacationing when kids are out of school is certainly a convenient time but can be the most expensive time to go on vacation, as well as the most crowded at popular destinations, adding the unwanted tension you’re trying to leave behind. Consider roads less traveled, especially if you’ve already been to Disney, for example.

“And by roads, I mean think literally. Get in the car instead of on the plane for your next trip, but only if that is something you know your family will enjoy. You know your family and whether a car journey will help you achieve your goal of relaxing or not. Discuss options together and come up with something everyone has agreed they think they will enjoy,” Harvey said. [Read more…] about 5 Ways to make the most of your vacation

Family Fun In Town

September 11, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

Today as a bit of an early Mothers day event the four of us went out and painted pottery.

Here is how it works, you go to a pottery place, pick a piece, paint it, and the come back in a week and it has been fired and is all glossy looking.

As a family event this is not really cheap but it allows everyone to really interact. In our case we shopped around a bit and my four year old son got a little 12 dollar dinosaur, while my eight year old daughter got a 26 dollar turtle piggybank and my wife and I just helped the kids with colors and painting. For the kids there is a sitting/painting fee and no cost to us. [Read more…] about Family Fun In Town

Best cheap trip for summer 2008

September 11, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

At a time when fuel, food, and even the price of postage are more expensive than ever, an affordable summer vacation may seem to be slipping out of reach. But there are still plenty of places, both in the U.S. and abroad, where travelers can enjoy beautiful beaches, outdoor adventures, wine tastings and spas, and unique cultural experiences–without breaking the bank.

Pauline Frommer, series editor of Pauline Frommer’s Travel Guides, has selected ten top budget destinations, from romantic getaway spots to family faves to exotic destinations for adventurous travelers.

Here they are, in no particular order:

Berkeley Springs, West Virginia

America’s first spa town–even George Washington came to take the waters here!–is still a delightful and very affordable spot to get pampered. At the historic Bath House in Berkeley Springs State Park (tel. 304/258-2711), a soak in 102-degree thermal waters and a Swedish massage starts at just $40. Berkeley Springs offers quaint shops, horseback riding, golf, excellent hiking (in nearby Capacon Resort State Park) and, of course, lots of history. Camping this Summer?

September 10, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

Well the Summer camping season is not her yet, but it is not too early to make plans for what to do for vacation this Summer. With gas prices on the rise there is always a bit of nervousness about going away on a long road trip.

I am a tech guy by background so I tend to overanalyze situations. The last couple of days I spent at least six hours trying to decide on which pair of headphones to buy for my home stereo…maybe overanalyze is not really the right word.

Anyway there are a few things to look at besides just gas prices for what you should do for a summer trip this year.

Deciding on a Camping Holiday

Gas prices

Hotel or camping?

How many hours of driving a day?

New destination?

Where have you always wanted to go?

These questions will hopefully help you answer your summer vacation plans. Another really important lesson that I have learned with my kids being so young (4 year old and an 8 year old) is that there is no point in driving for more than 4 hours in a stretch and 8 hours driving in a day is really pushing it with young kids. I always tried to get more driving in and now that I drive shorter hours per day on holiday we all enjoy the driving a lot more.
